Seen as the snow is here meaning winter is now upon us I thought I would start a new thread.

From a visit today the work on the Painted Dog enclosure is progressing well with at least one big digger at work today. The paths from the Grevy's Zebra enclosure, Kafue Flats Lechwe enclosure and just past the Tsavo Black Rhino building are closed due to the building work. There was also work being carried out in the Rhino enclosure as you drive in and over from the Tsavo Bird enclosure. The paths were gritted today but were slippery where the snow was melted due to foot traffic.

The baby Black Tailed Marmoset seems intent to be near mum. Sophia is venturing out more at the Jaguars. Red Pandas are apparently very active in the mornings now. The Giraffes as well as most primates were indoors all day due to the fact the moats/canal were totally iced over.
 
As far as I am aware he is fine. I didn't see him today but nothing got mentioned while talking to one of the presenters.
 
Think the plan is for Lily to be moved in Feb or March of next year. As of yet I don't know where to.
 
Is there any confirmation yet that Franka the spectacled bear is pregnant or not?
 
Popped in today for a quick (not so quick) visit! :D Two peices of news, the first being a group of atleast 3 Golden-headed Lion Tamarins are currently on exhibit within the enclosure beside Geoffroy's Marmosets... I also saw both the Black Tailed Marmosets and the Eastern Pygmy Marmosets.

The second peice of news being that the Gambian Pouched Rats within the Secret World of the Okapi have had young.

Very nice addition in the Lion Tamarins may I say. Always nice for a zoo to have a good Callitrichidae collection.
 
Missed the tamarins yesterday :(. Hopefully will get to see them sometime in the New Year.

Anyway, I'm trying to get a list going of happenings and news, and have a couple of questions so I can fill in the blanks.

1) Paix says that there were 'at least' 3 Golden-headed lion tamarins. Can anybody confirm a definate number?
2) Can anybody confirm the actual date they went on-show? And the date that they arrived at the zoo if possible [and different, I assume so]?
3) About the Gambian pouched rats, does anybody know when the young were born? (just the month is fine, any actual date is a bonus :)) - but if possible does anybody know whether it was late November or early December?
4) Does anybody know many young the Gambian pouched rats have had?

A couple of slight additions from my visit [04/12/10].
  • Dicky and Stuma [the Okapi for anybody who doesn't follow names] were together, with all gates and doors open. Dicky seemed very interested, but again Stuma would not stand still. He tried a few times and constantly followed her in and out of the off-show quaters (which could be seen since the doors were open). However, she was having none of it and we left when it didn't look like things were going to get any better (after Stuma got really fed up and I saw an Okapi run for the first time ;p)
  • A pair of Radiated tortoises were mating. I'm not up on my tortoise biology, so whether there is any chance of it being successful I couldn't tell you. All I can say is there was mounting and thrusts ;p
  • Realm of the Red Ape seemed nicer than normal when we first entered (and it was around midday) - No sign of any Borneans or the Lar gibbons they share with. I can't imagine a netted enclosure is their favourite in the rain. As soon as we got to the Sumatrans though, it seemed everybody knew Emma was up in her spot by the viewing window (like they have an 'orang-sense' or something) and they all teleported in and clogged up any decent views for pics. I liked the fact that everybody was saying 'look at him' and stuff, and as soon as I tell AgileGibbon that Emma is by the window everybody starts saying 'look at her' :D. I had the last laugh though, because as lovely as Emma is I saw Puluh and couldn't resist a few snaps of him. I sat low by the empty window and snapped away a Puluh who was on the back 'balcony.' He was having a cuddle with one of the babies (don't know which). Anyway, as I was taking photos, Subis climbed to the window to greet me :). It was ace to see them both at the windows at the same time, since everybody just seemed fixed on the one. I took a couple of pics of Subis and fascinated myself when I showed them back to her and she actually reacted. I know apes have different reactions, but it seemed that she recognised herself, because she pulled the same expression/body-language of all girls who have their pics taken: a hand covering the face as if to say 'ohh, that's horrible. Delete it.'

p.s. forgot to add that a lone Great Indian hornbill was in the aviary where the Wrinkled hornbills should be. I didn't take any proper looks because I was trying to do a 'mammal/reptile' orientated day and hence we just walked past without really stopping, so they may have moved the Wrinkled hornbills to another aviary, but didn't spot them. Any ideas anybody?

Not sure if I've missed something but according to ISIS there are no Leontopithecus chrysomelas Golden-headed tamarin but there are 1.1 Leontopithecus chrysopygus Black lion tamarin. :confused:

They now hold both. The Black Lions are off show with the Golden-headeds on show next to the Geoffroy's Marmosets. I believe they arrived from Banham on the 27th/28th November, the group is 0.3.

@Pygathrix - yes, they are very new additions, so I can't imagine ISIS having a listing of them yet :). Again though, Zootierliste are on the ball :p ZootierlisteHomepage
