Vogelpark Avifauna Vogelpark Avifauna news

I am preparing for a trip around Holland. Are Cuban Trogons, White-eared Brown Doves and Rose-breasted Grosbeaks still at Alphen Aan den Rijn? Where and when can they be best seen?

I believe the g4osb3aks and troops are behind the scenes. The brown doves are present in the Philippine hall (the first tropical hall) but are very difficult to see

I had a wonderful stay at Avifauna over the weekend. Here's what I found out:

Kiwi Maia is currently being held in the small brick house near the Cerrado and the Eagle-owls, there is a daily weighing at 16:30, which doesn't showcase much if you're tall and you're asked to stand in the back of the crowd...

Maia's parents have been separated. They used to be held close together next to the night safari, but the father (Rangi) has been moved behind the scenes near the Pelican lake. The mother (Whina) is still held near the former Night Safari with Grey peacock-pheasants and Laughing kookaburras.

I also had a hilarious and unplanned run-in with JustGoron. Luckily he had booked a kiwi experience, which allowed him to get into Whina's enclosure (which is the only reason I know she's still in there, as the Kiwi signage has been removed for that enclosure). He managed to take this amazing photo:

The Night Safari was completely hidden away, with zero signage about its permanent closure (had to redirect multiple people who were looking for it). The Stone-curlews have moved to the last tropical hall, and the Barn owls are currently held behind the scenes somewhere. Apparently the Night Safari space has already been cleared out and it currently being used as storage.

Avifauna is also building new holding aviaries for the show birds, these are being built near the Australian area. The path near the emus has shifted slightly to make room, meaning you can now get a better view of the enclosure. The old Kookaburra/Brush-turkey aviary has been removed here.

There is nothing to be seen at the site of the new Vulture aviary, though signage has revealed that there will also be enclosures for Meerkats and Bat-eared foxes included in the new area. The signage also mentions some facet of the design: it will include multiple pools and a rocky area with hidden nesting boxes for the vultures.

There were some changes in the collection since my last visit, but nothing that you won't see in the zoo guides.
