Chester Zoo's elephant house was built on the cheap from huge concrete road blocks collected from around the area once the war was over. The zoo itself didn't sustain any damage in the war, it was pretty small at that time anyway

That was the old Indian Elephant House, behind Oakfield House on the site next to the monorail, which is now the main public toilets.
I think one or two of them can still be seen in the wall of 'Europe on the Edge' aviary (which used to be part of the polar bear enclosure) on the other side of the path from the tigers.

This picture shows the road blocks in the sun bear enclosure (now housing the yellow mongooses). There are also some blocks visible at the lion enclosure.

I believe they were used in the Polar Bear enclosure too- and possibly as supports for the public walkway behind and above the old chimp islands?
