Walrus currently in captivity

I guess I should be more concerned about the heat

A very legitimate question that should not only be asked about walruses in Thailand, but above all about snow leopards, takins, giant pandas or musk oxen in, for example, San Diego or in the new dry season in Central Europe. At least walruses still have a good opportunity to cool off - snow opards and musk ox don't like to go into the water.;)

We do ask those questions, all the time :p That doesn't mean it's not a valid concern here as well ;)

But northern Mexico wasn't sub-tropical 28,000 years ago. Regardless of "being resistant to all types of moisture" (most, if not all aquatic/semi-aquatic mammals will be by definition), the heat will not be doing the Walruses in Thailand any favors sadly. There's a reason they were pushed back to the Arctic come the end of the last glacial period.

I totally agree that the heat is terrible for wlaruses and keeeping them in Thailand is a stupid idea. But Nothern Mexico was even theght of the Glacial Maximum still consideredsub-tropical. I was only talking about extinct prehistorc walruses and seals.. And Ebirah766's and RatioTile's questions about them.
I never even tried to talk about the the modern species (Odobenus rosmarus) or defending this idea at all. It is allready hard enough to keep them succesfull in much colder climates. Keeping them in Thailand will not work well, espically in breeding them.

There is a very simple solution to the problem. Keep animals only kept indoors, as is done with pandas. Or with hippos, tapirs, great apes. Then you can also keep walrus or polar bears in Thailand. Outdoor enclosures are overrated anyway. Whether the walruses in Thailand are worse off than the musk oxen in Germany in the dry season or the takins and pandas in San Diego is an open question.

Olga was quite special.

I know breeding of walruses had been a bust for a while, but it would be nice for Brookfield to somehow get a new one sometime down the line.

From doing some research it seems like a lot of walruses in captivity have stillbirths or die rather early deaths (they can live up to 40 years in the wild). What are some reasons they are hard to keep?

It has been seven months since the global captive walrus population was updated so the following post will publicize the current census.

Tania has been transferred from Hamburg to Pairi Daiza. Link to Facebook report provided in my news thread post, quoted below.

17-year old walrus Tania was transferred from Hamburg to Pairi Daiza a few days ago, according to a report on Facebook posted this morning. At 1.230 kilograms she is according to the message substantially larger than the male Thor and the other female Petruska.

What is this based on? That'd be quite a few additional walrus if even half these had them

All of these facilities house walrus plus an additional three or so others -- I've visually confirmed 49 walruses in China, at the very, absolute least, over the course of 2020, with a true count likely in the 60s (Chimelong Ocean Kingdom alone had over 14 pups at one point)
