Walrus currently in captivity

Chimelong's 0.1 "Emma" delivered a male calf named Dūn Dūn on July 5th

And according to a team member at the park, 1.0 WoWo's official name is "Tianyou"

I saw a statement from a park regular that Chimelong has now had four total births including 1.0 "Lala" of 2023, but I wasn't able to find anything verifying that or any additional information. If anyone here has seen anything more please chime in and let us know!

Basilla (0.1) at SWC in San Diego is deceased.

Why are there so many at SWF

Slowpoke is a geriatric walrus that lives and performs at the Sea Lion Stadium. The others live in the walrus exhibit at the Expedition Odyssey. Garfield and Kaboodle are the breeding pair of the park, their last calf is Kora. ChouChou used to live in SWC but was transferred to SWF to breed there after no success in SWC. And Ukiaq is a rescued calf who was to SWF in order to live with a surrogate mother and a play mate.

Dozer in SWC used to live with some females but unfortunately they died. And the other parks have young animals. Eventually some moves are going to happen, I don’t think that Dozer is going to live alone; and Lakina and Balzak will have to be separated soon, they are half siblings and they are reaching sexual maturity.

But Lakina is a hybrid. Will they still breed her?

The Quebec walrus (Atlantic and Pacific) have been transferred to deserts of Abu Dhabi.
Still none in New York City’s Coney Island
Arnaliaq (the park's only pure Atlantic walrus) passed at Quebec in 2020. Only Boris, a Pacific walrus, went to Abu Dhabi — the hybrid, 0.1 Lakina, and her Pacific half-brother 1.0 Balzak went to the US.

The last pure captive Atlantic walrus passed at the Izhevsk Zoo in 2022

Thank You.
The last time I went to Aquarium of Quebec I was informed that the walrus had been transferred to Abu Dhabi. Not having been there since prior to 2020 I was unaware Analiaq has passed away in the interim.
Thank You for informing and I apologize for any misinformation
So this, unfortunately , leaves the Aquarium of Quebec without walruses and Abu Dhabi with them
Someone must see the irony in tbe fact that an aquarium in a county where they are an indigenous specie can not maintain where an arid nation in tbe middle of a desert can.
Something is off here

Well, originally, Aquarium of Quebec’s plan was a bit different. When both females were alive there were plans to work with the Toronto Zoo in order to send some walruses there if the breeding program would continue being successful. Unfortunately, both females died so the Aquarium decided to stop exhibiting walruses so as to focus on others pinniped species. A tough but wise decision to make, especially for the long-term future of the Aquarium.

As an observer I will admit that the reason I specially went to Aquarium du Quebec was to see the walrus -specifically the Atlantic sub species (Coney Island originally exhibited an Atlantic along with Pacific).
It is a pity that there is no concerted effort to breed Atlantic and Pacific walrus in captivity . I suppose they have gone the way of Polar bears and any captive propagation plan for them as well

I'm not sure what you're talking about because there are concerted efforts to breed both of those species in captivity in multiple countries/regions around the world, including North America.

I find it hard to understand what an institution in tbe middle of an Arabian desert or, for that matter , Hong Kong harbor can do for walrus what a Canadian institution can not

Money and commitment make the difference sometimes - hence the SeaWorld parks are the primary holders of not just walrus but the most reliable breeding colonies of subantarctic penguins as well.

Agreed. The will, the finances and dedication and direction are the four things necessary for any project
