Walrus in Southampton Waters

Amazing news-a large Walrus seen on Calshot Beach this morning already all over social media and news sites so no qualms about posting now.

Not that I am suggesting people flock down there to see it, as we don't want a tragic repeat of the Freya incident, and the general public are pretty dumb.

But yes, I do want to go see it, possibly the only chance I may ever get. I hope it will stay safe in The Solent considering how busy it is.

This is the third walrus to appear in the UK in the last two years if I'm not mistaken.

I have a feeling there may have been one or two others up in Shetland over the last few years - but in terms of the "main body" of the UK you're correct.

It'd be nice if he wanders up into the North Sea and visits my neck of the woods ;) Wally never went that way, and Freya only popped up in this part of the UK very fleetingly indeed.

I was really hoping that Wally would make his way up to north Wales while he was in the Irish Sea but alas it never happened.

I was only about 10 miles from Calshot Spit on Friday but would certainly not have had the time to go there even if I had known this news then..:( This one is older than the others, bigger tusks.

I wonder why these several Walruses are popping up in UK/North Sea waters, is it an increasing trend and if so, why...

I know Walruses historically occurred in UK waters - is is possible they are re-claiming that range?
