It's about time something was done with that enclosure. Even when the wolves were in there, it wasn't the most interesting exhibit...

Can you post any details please?

Case File

It's all public because planning applications have to be :)

The plans and all related documents are on there as PDFs.

The house just seems a very nice, standard kind of butterfly house; thankfully a little more permanent than London's. It's L-shaped to fit the space.

No sweat :)

I'm quite looking forward to this building actually. Those who know me know I have a soft spot for things creepy and crawly so a dedicated invertebrate facility is just my kind of thing (even if it's specifically for a single order of insects...).

Good find!
This has always been a difficult corner site. If I remember correctly it was at one time used for hyaenas and then bagot goats, before the maned wolves - but none of them have been very satisfactory displays.
I hope that they will use the opportunity to add some more plantings and signs to the hedgerow along the zoo boundary which is supposed to be a 'natural' area. It would be nice to attract some British butterflies to make the path a mini nature trail.

Also Collared Peccary, which is the earliest thing I remember in that paddock (some time post-hyaena but pre-Maned Wolf).

I can remember Husky Dogs (1960s) Striped Hyena and Black-backed Jackal (1970s) and when the small paddocks were turned into one large one, Collared Peccaries, Vietnamese Pot-bellied Pigs and Bagot Goats (1980s)

Will the butterfly house be specific to a particular geographical region, i.e Africa, or South America?

Looking at the designs I'm suprised that there's no plans for display cases for other invertebrates.
