a bit of a random post, but I was browsing ISIS as one does and I came across the interesting inclusion of 9 western weka at Melbourne Zoo and 5 at Healesville.

The heading, rather confusingly, said
Gallirallus australis australis australis
Synonym of Gallirallus australis australis, Wester
Range: Eastern,southern Australia,Tasmania

Are there weka at Melbourne and Healesville, and if so I'm assuming they came from Macquarie Island during the weka eradication there?

Any idea anyone?

Nope. This would be a mis-classified record of buff-banded rails. There are nine at Melbourne and six (close enough to five for ISIS) at Healesville.

I was wondering if it was a misclassification of some kind but I couldn't imagine what or how!

(Also turns out it was Stewart Island weka G.a. scotti introduced to Macquarie Island anyway, not western weka, so that guess of mine went out the window :D)
