Welcome back, American crocodiles

This is great! I first learned there was an American crocodile (in addition to alligator) almost 20 years ago. I heard at that time the population was 200-300 and have not really heard anything since then, so I assumed it was still that low. This is a really nice surprise!
 
Did this thread initially have the word "alligator" in its title, or did I imagine that?

Also, it seems like American Crocodiles in the USA don't grow as large as those in warmer climes. I remember in the 1980s hearing about 6m crocs in Jamaica and Central/South America eating kids.
