Some exciting news to start the year & thread off with

New project takes flight at the Welsh Mountain Zoo!

We have some big news to share!

Our Reptile House and Alligator House have closed their doors to make way for something truly special: Papilio Forest – our brand-new Butterfly House Habitat coming this Easter! ✨

This new addition will immerse guests in a beautiful, vibrant mixed species habitat, showcasing a diverse range of tropical butterflies, ants, fish and more in an interactive, educational space.

We’re thrilled to embark on this project that will bring a new dimension of wildlife wonder to our zoo!

While we say goodbye to the Reptile and Alligator Houses, we promise it’s not the end – it's a transformation into something magical! Stay tuned for updates on the progress of Papilio Forest as we continue to make the Welsh Mountain Zoo THE place where conservation comes to life!

Thank you for your support, and we can’t wait to welcome you to our upcoming butterfly paradise!

It would appear that if you check their social media that a slow mover is also a new addition ;)

On January 30th, the zoo announced that due to avian influenza, they closed the Penguin Pool and Flamingo Walkthrough areas to the public, as well as put Penguin Parades and the penguin animal experience on hold for the immediate future.

IMG_7157.jpeg Visited today for the first time in a few months. I don’t know where from or how long she’s been there, but a female gibbon has arrived and has been mixed with Jake. She has a large gash on her right arm at the moment, a keeper told me she had this when she arrived and is being treated for it.

There also seems to be a new great grey owl.

Visited today on what was an absolutely lovely day! Brown bears, snow leopards, margay, and tigers all active... Usually at least one of those is a no show for me so I had a great time.

The old lesser rhea enclosure has new inhabitants, a pair of southern screamers.

Unfortunately I didn't get to check out the new butterfly house as it closed at 3pm, I assume due to the construction next door on the site of the old children's farm. The building looks like its going to be decently tall, I remember hearing talk about sloths arriving, maybe it is for that?

Seems to be only the one spider monkey left now, this species is on the way out in the UK it seems sadly. On that note of species on their way out, I saw no black-faced ibis in the condor aviary and the sign was gone so it looks like thats another species gone sadly.

I noticed only a single goat in the old ostrich enclosure and the old goat enclosure was empty, not sure if there is only one left or more were inside?

The eagle chicks look pretty much fully grown now, and are quite loud!

So there's no Rhea or Ostrich here now at all? That's a shame.
Are the Southern Screamers new?

Glad to hear you had a great day here, I really must learn to drive so I can visit more often especially with being quite close(45mins away)

Nope, no rhea or ostrich now. The only ratites now are the emus. Screamers are new as far as I am aware, took me by surprise when I saw them! I think they are a nice replacement for the rhea, not a species you see very often around these parts.

I don't drive either! I got the train then walked :D It's not a great zoo to walk to really, there's parts with no footpath but it's definitely doable in about half an hour depending on how fast of a walker you are.
