Welsh Mountain Zoo Welsh Mountain Zoo News 2022

More good news, 1:0 Bactrian camel born on 3rd July, unsure wether he was conceived here or wether mum was pregnant upon arrival.

He's been named Jochi

A margay kitten has recently been born at Welsh Mountain Zoo, the result of a new pairing with mother Sonora and father Maverick. It is still not known if the kitten is male or female.

MARGAY KITTEN BORN

Fantastic news. Have WMZ been successful with breeding this species before? I know its a first kitten for this pairing

Just seen on social media a post regarding the Przewalski horses. Interestingly they mention " our five horses" I thought there was only 4? There were 2 females then a female called Wendy arrived last year from Marwell and presumably she was pregnant on arrival (she had the male called Khan). Did another female arrive as well?

Regarding snow leopard Sumbe (that's him in the photo by the way), this is where his name comes from:
In Memory of Sumbe Tomorsukh

Any news on the arrival of the female snow leopard from France?
We spoke to the senior keeper recently, three weeks ago, the paperwork system for bringing in exotic animals still hasn’t been properly put into place by the UK government since we left the EU , very frustrating as they have a female lined up in Poland but can’t bring her into the UK
As far as I understand it the Female in France wasn’t able to be brought in for the same reason and it went somewhere else, I may be wrong there my memory isn’t what it was !

I made a short visit to the zoo today. Some things I noticed:

  • Swamp wallabies seem to be gone, there is now emus in their enclosure. How long has this been the case?
  • There is a good few large empty aviary looking structures not too far from the pine martens, they were all empty and looked like they were still being built as there was some equipment inside, does anyone know more about these?
  • Only one alligator now, the larger one was absent... not sure if it has died or been transferred or anything else.
  • Got a nice view of the young margay, very very cute!!
  • Lemur walkthrough was closed but no reason was stated, might be due to the wind? Not sure if that happens often but it was windy today.
  • Only two camels, the mother and son. Did the father die or get moved on? Curious because this was a recent birth.

Was this on the opposite side to where the Pine Martens are? On the way towards walking back up towards the Tigers? Silver/grey structures?

If so, these are actually going to be the new Pine Marten exhibits, which will give them a chance to breed them and give them more space.

I thought they were for the red squirrels?

Pretty sure for the Pine Martens, as they are looking to breed to release and when I went in June/July, I was chatting to one of the keepers feeding the Martens and she said, that they would be moving to those exhibits when finished, but there is exhibits being made for Red Squirrels as well, as they are looking more into supporting native species.

Yep, those are the ones.

It's great that WMZ are focusing on native species. Hopefully if funds allow in future, they could house Scottish wild cats. I just hope that they don't become anymore overlooked once Chester open their himalayan exhibit as this is a big focus for WMZ .
