Welsh Mountain Zoo Welsh Mountain Zoo News 2023

Has their first kitten moved to another collection now or is she still there?

I know she was there when I last visited as I asked in the office when renewed my adoption but never actually got to see her - even more elusive than their snow leopard for me :(

Your best bet to see them is by looking into the house at an angle where they usually curl up in a box or if you are lucky they are sometimes outside in the middle of the enclosure under the tree.

Wonderful news :D

Zoo hopes to breed Lar gibbons:

Zoo plans endangered gibbons breeding programme - BBC News

Colwyn Bay's Welsh Mountain Zoo has asked Conwy council if it can construct an indoor housing facility and extension of its gibbon viewing area.

The zoo currently has one single male lar gibbon, an endangered species.

It wants to introduce a female as part of a breeding conservation programme.
This is great news, the gibbon enclosure is probably the worst in the zoo currently. For the one animal it is fine (also that means there must have been a death this year? There was definitely two gibbons when I last visited in February) but it's certainly an ugly enclosure and could benefit from a redo!

Does anyone know what happened to the male chimps at Welsh Mountain? Sixpence is the only remaining male.

I seem to remember hearing that Jasper and Nickel were moved to a zoo in Italy…?

I believe that Coron and Groat have died. Is this correct? If so, does anyone know their cause of death - as they weren’t particularly old chimps.
Thanks!

The reptile house has been boarded up with a sign reading:

“The reptile house is now closed to visitors, to enable exciting future development!”

When I volunteered there many years ago they wanted to get rid of that and build a new tropical house, maybe that's back on the agenda.

Which chimpansees remain and do they have both pure-bred and hybrids?
Jasper and Nickel to what zoo in Italy?

I know that Jessie is the daughter of Tuppence (verus) but I’m unsure of the father.

I did some digging on the internet to see if I could retrieve some answers. It turns out that males Jasper (P.t. hybrid) and Nickel (Pan troglodytes Verus) were sent on breeding loan to Safari Ravenna.

In a feature on World Chimpanzee Day 2019 an Italian television station made mention of conservation activities at Safari Ravenna for World Chimpanzee Day in 2019. It turns out their group of chimpanzee had been determined to be a new genetic line for the West African verus subspecies. They sent a male from their family group to Ostrava Zoo on breeding loan. They also received 2 new male chimpanzee from the Welsh Mountain Zoo (Jasper and Nickel). The hope is that the newly formed breeding group will start reproducing in due course.

BTW: F Menolly (b. December 1984) was previously a female kept at Krefeld Zoo.
In the 2014 studbook the sire for F Jessie remains undetermined (multiple males).

F Vicky was born to F Katie (who is the sire)?

Forgive me if this is a daft question, but with it being a breeding loan, are Nickel and Jasper expected to return to WMZ at some point?

I wonder what will happen to the alligator...
I recall in years prior alligators were mainstay in many tropical houses in the UK... but they seem to have lost the appeal somewhat

On my one visit 3 years ago I recall I caught a glimpse of some margay shape... but then nothing more than that
