Welsh Mountain Zoo Welsh Mountain Zoo News 2024

There is a real range of popssibilities, even for the smaller species like Cuvier dwarf caiman or Philippine or Cuban crocodiles! Well, my personal pet peeve ..., it will be interesting to see what will replace the alligator or if the new Reptile House will have room for a crocodile species of sorts?

Given the design of the exhibit in question, Philippine or Cuban would be a potentially-disastrous choice if they didn't want the new inhabitants to escape with great rapidity :D

I get how and why you get attached to a species. However, from a conservation PoV I would rather that the Welsh Mountain Zoo focus on a more interesting or endangered/threatened crocodile species. I agree that if WMZ get another crocodilian, a more endangered species should be a priority, though whether they stick with the group at all is up in the air.

@JT have you been to the new reptile house since it opened? If so, what is it like and how different does it look?

I have, it’s largely the same with upgrades to the facades and vivariums. There seems to be more of a focus on education with new signs and displays. The layout is exactly the same but it is looking quite refreshed and tidied up with some welcome additions in terms of species. They also seem to have sorted out the cockroach problem! :D

Aesculapian snakes which escaped from the zoo around 50 years ago have been found in the roofing and walls in houses in Colwyn Bay.Dr Tom Major who led the 2 year long study of these escapees have found 240 of these snakes in the Colwyn Bay area and yet have not been sited anywhere else in Wales. These snakes can grow up to 1.8m though the largest one recorded in Colwyn Bay was 1.5m.

Nancy the alligator has left the collection, a staff member I spoke to told me they think she’s gone to the Isle of Wight - I’m not particularly familiar with the collections over there.

The Burmese python exhibit is empty and the kingsnake has been replaced my a Madagascan three eyed iguana. The remaining rhea has also gone - unsure if it’s been transferred or passed away.
