Farewell Casper
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the death of Casper, our adult male California Sea Lion.
Casper was a great ambassador for his species and a much-loved member of our Zoo family who will be deeply missed by the Zoo team and many of our regular visitors.

Sealion females Spray & Sofia can't be youngsters anymore. I've a feeling(could be wrong) that Spray was born 2000/2001, Sofia was born 2011ish and I thought there was a female called Rooney only a few years back but does anyone know if my info is close to being correct?

The staff have announced four possible names that the visitors can choose one from
1, Zephyr- meaning light/west wind
2 ,Tai lung -meaning great dragon
3 , Layan - representative of the Hymalayas
4 , Qilian - sky/mountain range

A few more updates:
- The tamarin group that had moved into the farm area have all left the collection, leaving only the single male who is still in the small monkey house.
- The new gibbon house is just about finished.
- Nancy the alligator is due to leave the collection in the next few weeks.
- The waterfall in the snow leopard enclosure has been turned off and the pool filled with bark chippings, presumably for the safety of the cub.
- One of the rheas has died leaving the zoo with a single individual (this happened months ago but I never got around to mentioning it).

I can’t say for sure what will be happening to the house, I can’t see it holding alligators again.
I don’t know where she’s going unfortunately, I’ll put further information on here if I find any out.
Albert passed away a few years ago.

Yep Albert passed a few years ago, a shame as he was quite impressive. I can't see it holding alligators again either, it's not the biggest in the world. Could maybe hold some smaller crocodilian species but the building is definitely past it's prime so wouldn't surprise me if it was demolished completely.

I get how and why you get attached to a species. However, from a conservation PoV I would rather that the Welsh Mountain Zoo focus on a more interesting or endangered/threatened crocodile species. There is a real range of popssibilities, even for the smaller species like Cuvier dwarf caiman or Philippine or Cuban crocodiles! Well, my personal pet peeve ..., it will be interesting to see what will replace the alligator or if the new Reptile House will have room for a crocodile species of sorts?
