And now for some good news: Werribee Open Range Zoo just got a little cuter with the arrival of a new zebra foal.

The foal, a filly named Zola (which means quiet or tranquil in Zulu), was born recently to experienced zebra mum Zaide. Zola is not the first foal born to Zaide, joining her siblings Zari and Mudhe (as well as the rest of Werribee's zebra herd, plus ostriches, rhinos and giraffes) on the zoo's lower savannah.

Keeper Lauren Irving says that while Zola is currently a bit shy, there's every chance she'll soon become bolder. "Zola is not straying far from mum Zaide’s side at the moment,” said Ms Irving. “If she’s anything like her mother, she will grow up to be an incredibly confident and assertive zebra.”

Zola is just one of many animal babies born at Werribee zoo lately, with a total of 11 antelope calves also making their debuts during the last two months. The new arrivals include five scimitar-horned oryx and six lowland nyala. The baby oryx are a particularly exciting addition to Werribee, with the species regarded as extinct in the wild.

For those wanting to spot either Zola or the antelope calves, the best way is to hop on the zoo's safari bus either during the morning or late afternoon when the animals are most active.

Werribee currently have 6 male Blackbuck and at least 1 Waterbuck displayed with their 4 Long Horned cattle - an interesting combination, especially seeing several adult coloured Blackbuck together.

In the exhibit after you come over the Werribee River? Male Blackbuck have shared the Long Horned Cattle enclosure for a while now, but the Waterbuck is a new addition. I would presume it’s one of their surplus males.

Significant news. Eight Plains Wanderers from Werribee Open Range Zoo have been released into the wild as a part of a research trial. The national captive population has produced 37 chicks so far with 20 of them being from Werribee - very promising success.

Great news and wonderful breeding result.

I do hope they acquire more unrelated birds for the captive breeding effort!?

Werribee have really done an amazing job with this species. :)

More birds will definitely be bought in if there is a desire for them, though at the moment, this won't be the case for at least another couple of years or so.

How large is the current founder group?

Here's an opportunity to give feedback on Werribee's future developments. Full article and link are below: Zoo's Sky Safari plans open for comment | Wyndham
Zoos Victoria is seeking public feedback on The Sky Safari project planned for Werribee Open Range Zoo, as part of an $83 million expansion of the tourist attraction.

Community consultation has opened on plans for The Sky Safari, a 1.6 kilometre tree-top gondola system of small group cabins that will elevate passengers 30 metres above the zoo.

The Sky Safari will transport up to 1200 people per hour on a 40-minute round trip showcasing views of the zoo savannah, across to the You Yangs, Melbourne and Port Philip Bay.

Feedback received by Zoos Victoria during the community consultation period will be included in an application to be considered by the Minister for Planning.

Zoos Victoria’s webpage says that Werribee Open Range Zoo’s expansion will prioritise animal welfare.

The zoo expansion is expected to create almost 350 jobs, including 90 direct jobs caring for animals and assisting visitors.

Once complete, the expansion is expected to increase the number of visitors at the zoo to more than 1 million every year.

It has been estimated the project will contribute more than $17.8 million annually to the Victorian economy.

The zoo’s expansion plans also include a 400-seat Water Hole Cafe with indoor and outdoor eating areas, providing diners with views of some animals.

The cafe will serve as a prelude to an elephant sanctuary walking loop.

Zoos Victoria’s herd of Asian Elephants will be relocated to Werribee, where they will live in a 22-hectare open range, naturalistic setting.

A new walking trail will guide visitors through an immersive landscape where the elephants roam.

A new carpark with up to 1000 spaces may also be built at Werribee zoo.

Feedback on The Sky Safari can be provided via a survey at: www.zoo.org.au/werribee/have-your-say-sky-safari/ or by emailing WZExpansionConsultation@zoo.org.au if you cannot access the survey.

The deadline for community feedback is Friday, October 15.

For anyone who's interested in the 1.4 transfer of Przewalski's Horses to Werribee listed in the 2020-2021 inventory report, the male (Zhenjin) came from Monarto, and the females (Mila, Buhhara, Naruu and Numrug) came from TWPZ.

A few bits and pieces from recent articles and the annual report:

  • a new hippo viewing area has been opened: "The zoo’s upgraded hippopotamus viewing deck now allows even better access to the sweeping panoramic and close-up views of the threatened species’ expansive habitat."
  • the gorillas recently received an upgrade to their off-display housing: "At Werribee Open Range Zoo, 92 countermeasures were delivered, including the completion of additional housing for the gorillas."
