West Midland Safari and Leisure Park West Midland Safari Park 2021

Just a single male? Do you happen to know where he was sourced from?

Sadly not, his horns are just stumps and is slightly blonder than the females, will be an impressive stag once his horns grow though. Extras, the Blackbucks are still non-breeding and the bachelor group of bantengs are still present and happy !

If so then that's a major disappointment. I certainly won't be going out of my way to visit WMSP any time soon. I just hope that all of the reptiles move to other UK collections, they certainly have a lot of awesome species to rehome and if there is one thing UK zoos are short on it's reptiles.

I'd recommend visiting it before it's demolished, once houses are allowed to open of course. They still have an impressive insect and fish collection. And who knows the site might invest in a new indoor rainforest as that's the only thing they haven't attempted :p

Hope the elephants are enjoying their new house and paddock once they have settled in
Agreed , will be less noise pollution and more natural for them, they mentioned removing one of the 3 fences once they've acclimatised to make it more natural for guests. Another thing is how deep the pool is, no clue of exact dimensions but way deeper than the jeep. It's also flatter for them and of course new house and 24 hour access !

Had final tour today, key things to note
  • Elephants are in the new house and will be released in a few days. They were transported in crates and left to acclimatise. Paddock is lovely and the deep pools are everywhere, just needs to grow a little and will be an icon in the site. Fencing in the same style as noahs ark and has fire grass and the low wire (Same in the old paddock). Sutton will leave in approximately 10 years with a the new male coming from wmsps 2 loaned males. Females are on list but unsure when they will arrive , just following EEP's advice at this time
  • Cheetah lodges are bearly visible from safari, the site plans to be a bachelor facility due to its poor breeding programme. The male in the old enclosure will join the new 2 once his mother and auntie have passed away.
  • Elephants old enclosure now has no electric fence and is called 'The borderlands' with the Camels in there to reduce traffic. The plan I presented on here has apparently been shelved and only phase 1 and 2 will be completed, possibly parts of 3
  • New barasingha male for breeding, new grevys zebra male to mate the 3 females on site, the new African ungulate house appears empty, muck clamp being used. Red pandas Lodges being worked on.
  • Mark o shear's is being demolished in the future as he is not connected to the looping group. Majority of large reptiles have already left the collection along with the addax, gemsbok and Majority of the cape buffalo, just the male and female left.
@bintarong do you know when the two African Elephant Bulls you mentioned will arrive, and where they are moving from?

Only 1 bull will come back which are owned by wmsp but out on loan. No clue which one or when but I assume I the near future. Either way it's better than waiting for Sutton to grow up. I assume it will be in the near future to increase the herd size.

@bintarong you never knew if he Sires calf’s at WMSP they may decide to keep him permanently. The Bull in question is owned by WMSP after all so they probably have the power to keep him permanently. @bintarong do you know if any Elephant Cowes will arrive this year?

Unfortunately not, as I went round they were welding the gates to make them more reinforced , hopefully for the males arrival. I didn't get any date for their arrivals and said they are still searching for females. Personally I'm hoping that they import a new cow and then breed the herd to a decent size, would be a nice family herd.

Both elephants and cheetahs were in new enclosures today, photos and videos are beginning to be released through local press and media. Dew things:
  • Wmsp will make an official post (At least I was told) on the social media soon.
  • Cheetahs enclosure looks better as it finished first and had time to grow. Elephants looks more like the UK classic sand and dirt African Elephant enclosure, however the front onshow is mainly grass.
  • Lodges are almost fully booked to the end of the year and beginning of 2022.
  • Keepers are still entering the paddock with elephants out and will gradually become non contact to not overwhelme them.
  • Both girls are on day paddock and then moved to lodges viewing at night with Sutton no were in sight. Possibly In bachelors paddock or house as the giraffe Island obstructs the view. Either way is definitely separated from the girls.
Photos can be seen on one of the paper below.

Looks if both Elephants and Cheetahs have settled in so well

There's some sad news from West Midland Safari Park.

"
It’s with great sadness and heavy hearts that we share the news that female lion Kayli has passed away at the age of 16.

She was one of the oldest in our pride and Mum to Charlie, Amber & Ambush, who also reside at the Park after being born here back in 2012. Kayli's legacy will also live on as she became a grandmother to Amber's four cubs, born in summer 2019.

She will be dearly missed by Keepers who have worked closely with her over the years."

I just been over to West Midland Safari Park's Facebook page earlier on and I understand that the elephants are settling in so well in their brand new habitat

Here they are settling so well in their new home
