West Midland Safari and Leisure Park West Midland Safari Park News 2011

What happened with Hope, Sharka, Tutsi and Zulu?

Hope (West Mids first Rhino calf) was transfered to a collection in Spain or the Canaries in 2007 (Can't remember the exact details sorry) along with one of the older cows that WMSP couldn't get breeding. The theory was that her fertility was being surpressed by the other, more dominant cows. I think this was Zulu but I'm not definate on that.

Believe the current plan is that they will house an all male group of Giraffes, and the female will leave to another collection in the UK.

Thanks for confirming that. The current male Henry, he wouldn't ex Longleat would he by any chance? (I know there was a bull of that name they needed to move on this year)

Interesting read. It seems there has been a complete overhaul of the white rhino herd. I know Sharka did not breed with the 1995 cows Mtuba and Zulu. Keyah has recently been transferred in too.

Hope and Zulu cleared. Former bull Sharka elsewhere (cannot imagine they leave a proven bull outside the EEP) and another proven female Tutsi also now transferred? The plot thickens ....

Tutsi is the mother of Barney, the current male (Born 21/9/05 Tutsi X Sharka) so this could explain why they have decided to relocate her to Whipsnade? He's now reaching maturity so they couldn't really hold onto both

I haven't come up with any explanation for Sharka's vanishing act just yet....
