Mother 22 year old who is called Five gave birth to the calf following artificial insemination using semen that had been frozen and stored in a French laboratory, after it had been taken from a wild elephant.
Do they still have a bull, or just the two females mentioned in the link.?
So potentially now five breeding groups of African Elephant in the UK. Can't help thinking that one collection (Port Lympne?) ought to be a bull group instead.
Great news for West Mid's. Fantastic to see they've got a calf as the only breeding that has happened in the UK in the past few years has been the Aspinalls.
And Knowsley and Colchester.
Well done WMSP.
I have heard that West Midlands has the largest coalition of male cheetahs in the UK, the largest group of white tigers in the UK and the largest group of common hippos in the UK. How many are there of each at the moment .........
It's a while since I was last at West Midlands Safari Park but, according to the 2013 European Hippo Studbook, there were eight female hippos in the collection as at 31st December 2012; obviously these figures could have changed since then.

But no bull?
