Thought it was best to probably start a new thread seeing as it is nearly March, although this is old news!

A Douroucouli (owl monkey/night monkey) was born on 24th November 2013. It has been named "Barney" although they arent sure on its gender. :)
 
0.1 Congo Buffalo born 23rd Feb. A first breeding for West Mids who received the species for the first time in 2013
 
I really do hope they separate the hybrid males from the fine pure-bred of Baringo giraffe.

Otherwise, we may have a another zoo within the UK where hybrids are still being something resembling a conveyer belt line ... :o

At the moment the tally is still 5+1 questionmark - SLWP -.

Interestingly though...
Mother 22 year old who is called Five gave birth to the calf following artificial insemination using semen that had been frozen and stored in a French laboratory, after it had been taken from a wild elephant.

So potentially now five breeding groups of African Elephant in the UK. Can't help thinking that one collection (Port Lympne?) ought to be a bull group instead.

Just the cows. The last bull went to Sosto in 2011

..of all the things I expected to read today, West Mids having had a baby elephant born was not one of them :rolleyes: but happy news all the same. :)

Which? Percentage-wise: which are breeding?

Of course: AI is to not as effective as natural breeding of course.
All the same it is nice to see another calf ...
 
Great news, although they are still in early days so possibly best not to exhale too fast....
 
Great news for West Mid's. Fantastic to see they've got a calf as the only breeding that has happened in the UK in the past few years has been the Aspinalls.
 
Extremely surprised by this, I do remember reading in a news article when they sent the boys away that they would be doing AI, but doubted anything would come of it, if it was attempted at all.

Wonderful news, I'll have to pester someone with a car pretty soon.
 
Cheetahs, tigers and hippos in 2014

I have heard that West Midlands has the largest coalition of male cheetahs in the UK, the largest group of white tigers in the UK and the largest group of common hippos in the UK. How many are there of each at the moment and what are the names, sexes and ages of the big cats at the park?

Anybody know the names, ages and sexes of the dholes in the Wild Woods?

It's a while since I was last at West Midlands Safari Park but, according to the 2013 European Hippo Studbook, there were eight female hippos in the collection as at 31st December 2012; obviously these figures could have changed since then.

As mentioned in my earlier post, the 2013 European Hippo Studbook lists eight female hippos at West Midlands Safari Park as at 31st December 2012. (And no males are listed as being present.)

Confusingly, looking into this in a little more detail, four of these hippos, although listed as females, have masculine names:- “Augustus”, “Hugo”, “Howard” and “Geoffrey”.

Checking back through earlier editions of the studbook, these four animals are listed as males in the 2007 studbook but are then listed as females in the 2008 edition and all subsequent editions!
