What animal looks different in real life to what you expected?

Wait klipspringers are larger than dikdik? The one I remember seeing at Brevard looked small albeit it was considerably far from me.
Klipspringer are significantly larger than dik-dik. They're comparable in size to a Yellow-backed Duiker.

Klipspringer are a bit larger than Kirk's Dik-dik, but they are very much *not* comparable in size to a Yellow-backed Duiker :D unless the comparison in question is "look how much smaller they are".

Kirk's Dik-dik reaches a maximum of 18 inches at the shoulder and 7.5kg, which is more or less the lower bound of the size range reported for Klipspringer (between 18-24 inches and 8-18kg).
Conversely, the Yellow-backed Duiker is the very largest of the duikers, at between 60-80kg!

When I first saw a grey wolf, I thought it was a coyote. However, this may have been because it was a Korean Wolf. When I saw Timber Wolves, I don't remember what I thought of their actual size, But I remember I thought that they were bigger than Coyotes. Btw, I've never seen Coyotes, so I'm just estimating their size based on the media.

Servals are a lot bigger than I expected.
Lions and tigers are enormous up close.
Pygmy hippos are still rather large.
I imagined Black-fronted Dotterels to be around the size of a Banded Lapwing, and was very surprised when I saw my first one!
Maned Wolves are a lot bigger than I was expecting.

Their height is pretty impressive. I have had a similar experience with getting up close to a cheetah, it is quite surprising just how tall and how slim they are.

A few months ago I saw European sousliks for the first time. For some reason I previously thought they were about the same size as prairie dogs, but they are actually substantially smaller and slimmer.

Where did you first see giant pandas, @Swanson02? The appearance of the pandas vary from zoo to zoo, but if you saw the pandas at Memphis Zoo back when they were still there, Ya Ya was always unusually small and slender for an adult panda at around 190 pounds. The pandas at Zoo Atlanta are rounder and fluffier and look more like how you might picture pandas. Lun Lun at her heaviest is over 240 pounds, which is pretty big for a female panda. Her mate, Yang Yang, is about as big as a panda gets, up to 300 pounds depending on the time of year. I feel like the pandas at the National Zoo are kind of in the middle size wise.
The one I saw at Chapultapec seemed very small. I know I've mentioned it before, but I really thought they were much bigger.

I don't know when you saw her, but Xin Xin at Chapultapec is one of the oldest pandas alive, so she might look a bit less roly-poly and fluffy than one in its prime. (Female pandas are also usually smaller than male pandas.)

It was last summer.

Racket tailed treepie (Crypsirina temia), much smaller than expected.
Spix macaw, for me it looked more like an Aratinga in build and behaviour than a small macaw species.
Phillip's dik-dik smaller than expected and was already expecting a small animal.
Male cape buffalo in the wild, bigger, bolder and even more confident than expected.

The Buff-banded Rail is way smaller than I expected - I thought they would be comparable in size to an Australasian Swamphen!

I was surprised how large the Spotted Quoll was when I first saw one - I was expecting a rabbit-sized animal, not one the size of a cat!

Royal Spoonbill was another surprise - I expected a much larger bird, only a bit shorter than a Black-necked Stork. Instead, I found they were only slightly larger than the Australian White Ibis!!

Northern Leaf-tailed Gecko was larger than I thought.

The Reticulated Python was so much bigger than I thought!!! I knew it was a massive snake but holy **** I did not realise they were that big!!!

Tiger Puffers are way bigger than I expected, I had imagined a fish similar in size to the Smooth Toadfish, but they're actally more like Stars-and-stripes Puffer size!

Having only seen Kirk's dik-dik and not klipspringer (I missed them at both LPZ and Brookfield during my Chicago trip last year), I was also under the impression that they were roughly the same size. Guess that's a future entry for this thread averted.

Haven’t read every page so not sure if it’s been mentioned yet but Binturong were a lot bigger than I was expecting. I think I was anticipating slightly bigger than a cat/red panda but they’re very stocky.

Probably a bit of a niche one, but having previously only seen Brahminy blind snakes, who really are regular-earthworm-sized, my encounter with a Dominican blind snake was surprising. Much larger species, that felt a lot more like a 'proper' snake.

Everything I'd read about goliath beetles made them seem really enormous in my mind - I was imagining something as large as my two clenched fists together. When I saw my first one earlier this year, it was less than half the size that I was expecting. It didn't seem that much larger than the more commonly-kept Mecynorrhina beetles kept nearby.
