Fortunately, though, years later I subsequently saw grey-necked picathartes in Frankfurt and white-necked picathartes in Antwerp, Rotterdam, Vienna and Frankfurt.

I vaguely remember Grey-necked Picathartes at Frankfurt. Were they at liberty in the Bird Hall?. I think I remember them/one hopping along a low wall...Rather like you there were many other things I was concentrating on at the time.

I think the much more recent Spix Macaws at Paira Daiza would be the outstanding species for me though.

Cuckoo roller
Sickle-billed vanga
Sumba hornbill

When l saw these species they were all the last individual in captivity. Now they're gone.

I remember seeing the last Grey-necked picathartes in Frankfurt along with Congo peafowl in 2007, both in enclosure.

I saw both species of picathartes in Frankfurt Zoo's Bird House on a number of occasions. Rather like "Dassie rat", I remember them housed in glass-fronted aviaries, not at liberty in the walkthrough hall.

I agree with "Pertinax" about the Spix macaw.

As for captive; I did see Mauritius Kestrel in Chester.
There were quite a few about at one time, zoos didn’t persist with them, possibly because of a relatively short natural life span and the need to breed a lot to maintain numbers.
One of the rarest things I’ve seen is Bank Cormorant, at Living Coasts and now at Birdworld; only one outside South Africa

I think the rarest are: Kagu in berlin zoo, st. Vincent amazon in Pairi, Spix's macaw in Pairi, Screaming piha in burgers and Indian red-headed vulture in Parco natura viva

Picathartes at Artis Zoo Amsterdam were at liberty in the Bird House. They nested in the entrance hall above the visitors and loved to "help" the keepers in the kitchen preparing food.
