This has probally been done b4, but would like to c what others think and the problems with getting certain animals.

My list is:

1. Giant Pandas
2. Gorillas
3. Polar Bears (in a domed exhibit with like eden project but kept cold)
4. Hippos
5. New Lion and Tiger exhibits

Gorilla's are planned for Heart of Africa. The lion and tiger exibit's are not ideal but perfectly addequete for the time being.

Hi Welcome to the forums.

Chester have ruled themselves out of Giant Panda's due to costs, And I agree with this they are not worth the money.

Gorill's will be arriving with HoA plans

Polar, very much doubt they wold exhibit these again.

Hippo's should also come back to the zoo within 10 years.

And what is it with everyone wanting new Lion and Tiger enclosures?

true there not that bad actually, jst thought maybe for holding more sub species or youngsters.

Thank you, thought i should join up, been visiting for a few weeks now, i only love 5 mins form the zoo, which is handy, and did ecology and conservation biology at degree and post grad, got to do some modules at the zoo aswell

There are no plans for Asoka and Asha (Asiatic Lions) to breed again. The tigers will hopefully have there first litter in the near future. There are far worse exibits out there. :(

 Do you mean another exhibit for another sub-species?

If so, there are rules from the EEP that no collection is allowed to hold both African and Asian Lions.

Tigers, would they really want to exhibit another sub-species?

yeh i ment Tigers, jst a thought, I know they prob wont hold different Sub species, but with the threat of extintion on them, and them being a conservation zoo

hmm....they stopped holding Amur because there numbers were high in captivity and so eventually swapped to Sumatrans which are more threatened at this moment in time.

Not sure there would be any advantage in holding another species unless they made a specific zoned are for Sumatra or India or something like that.

However there natural vision plans don't show anything like this but who knows what will happen to the Giraffe area once/if they are moved.

Erm.....hate to disagree but I do not share this view. Its getting there and maybe after natural vision is completed it may well be "World class".

Ok then taun, what areas at Chester zoo do you think are keeping the best zoo in Britain from being called world class.
I would also like to add that i have never visited Chester in person, so i am asking not as someone who has experienced Chester in person, only through the net:o

I agree with those that Chester is already world class - but there is always room for improvements for a zoo which has so much space availible. Although for the average visitor, it`s already more then big enough, there is already more then you can easily see in a day without getting stressed.

Where to start, the old orang-utan house needs to go (and hopefully will).

The Giraffe house needs replacing, outdoor is great.

Old cattle house is adequate but would love a more purposed built house.

Asian Plains exhibit needs sorting out

Another paddock for the elephants (maybe could even get grass to grow then :p).

They are making good strides to get ride of the outdated enclosures, and probably wont be able to get rid of them all but with natural vision maybe the other things could be forgotten about or will have changed.

Chester are “World Class” in that they are always looking at improving but am not sure ANY zoo could have everything perfect.

I thought the original orang house was being redeveloped for phase 2 of Realm of the Red Ape?

Plans were scrapped a long time ago, Am still hopefully that some time in the future they do finish it but it probably would not be until after natural vision.

I would definately rate Chester as World Class already.:) It is not so much the actual animal species held, though it is a very diverse collection, as the quality of exhibits and the size of collection generally.

I would like to see Gorillas and Bonobos added to the primate collection in due course. Hippos would be a good addition too. Dare I say I would like to see the Lion Enclosure landscaped as they have done with the Tigers, the enclosure itself is fine in size etc but looks uninspiring- some bamboo, rocks, sand and thorn trees would help immensely.

Giant Pandas are not necessary for any Zoo to reach top status in my opnion.

I would also rate chester as world class and feel that it is quality not quantity that makes a world class zoo. I would liek to see Chester sucessfully breed the birds of paradise. Obtain breeding aye-aye's and an unusual marsupial species such as cuscus or tree kanagroo.

..Ooh and I would also like to see small cat species at chester. But other than that a world class zoo.

I would agree with those who say Chester is already a world class zoo, at least in terms of the size, diversity and presentation of its collection. It was rated amongst the top 15 zoos worldwide by Forbes Traveler in 2007.

However, there's always room for improvement, so although I don't usually indulge in these "flights of fancy" topics, here's what I would like to see happen at the zoo:
  • Some world-class zoo architecture (Heart of Africa bodes well)
  • New interactive biodiversity exhibit (similar to ZSL's Web of Life)
  • New and enlarged aquarium building (it's on the cards, I know)
  • Hippoquarium (similar to Berlin and Copenhagen)
  • Desert biome (similar to Omaha's Desert Dome)
  • Expansion of elephant paddocks
  • Closer links between zoo exhibits and in situ conservation projects
  • A second primate house housing gibbons, guenons and baboons
  • Manatees (just because ;))
