What do you all think about circuses?

Well I don't have problems with people who do have problems with circuses, live and let live :p
And cat-man, I'm not sure as I've never seen it, but I've heard they're pretty good.

^I double CB's statement.

Animals are doing this against their will. How would you like it if you were forced to do something you really, really didn't, non-stop?

Well they're not in zoos out of choice. I'm sure if it bothered them that much they'd resist. I've seen it and they dont'; they do it, get their reward, job done :)

No, they were hybrids taking up space in a breeding facility, and as written above I have no problem with circusses. You love Heythrop, that's pretty much a circus :p

The animal trainersat heythrop are circus trainers and the animals are trained in much the same way.

In zoos they can do their own thing; they'd be the occasionall bother from a keeper for maitenance or vet check reasons, but their generally let be.

They're not pets. They're wild animals. You wouldn't have seen training methods for yourself, and the only footage we have of it is brutal and cruel. I just can't make out how you find them OK, especially when it comes to elephants.

I have seen it for myself, I did nearly 8 weeks work experience at a training facility. We weren't stopped from watching anything, if anything we were encouraged as they want the circus name cleared.

Times have changed as well, but I guess most are living with past memories in mind. I would suggest people visited such places to gain a better perspective of what goes on within the circus and behind the scenes, as any self respective circus would be more than happy too.

sorry, will try,

but arn't you shocked that

they came from howletts!,

I'm Furious:mad:

At last we might get some sense from you!!!:p

As for been shocked that the Tigers came from Howletts not at all if it means less Hybrids in a zoo then good, they will still be very well looked after, any way you would be surprised where some of the stuff we see in zoo`s and safari parks came from.;):D

The video showing elephant abuse at a Greek circus made me so sad that I can´t express it in words. Perhaps the most shocking thing about it is how submissively the elephant takes the beating from this sadistic monster, her "trainer". It appears that this is an everyday routine experience for her. Probably she was totally mentally broken down years and years ago.

That video is very sad, gives all trainers and circuses a bad name

I have seen some tigers at Big Cat Rescue (Florida) that were retired from Feld Entertainment (Ringling Bros and Siegried & Roy). Feld pays for all of their care at Big Cat Rescue for the duration of their lives, so at least that's something. Some big cats are trained with affection training and do have perhaps more interesting lives than zoo cats. Still, the thought of them being crated around from town to town is disturbing (not Seigried & Roy's, of course, who live in Las Vegas).

Most small circuses are probably horrendous and of course third world countries are worse (remember the AZA rescued six polar bears from a Mexican circus a few years ago?). Although I'm not crazy about any circus and haven't been since I was a kid, I suppose at least Ringling Bros treats their animals well.

At our local county fair years ago I saw a shark tank built into a large truck trailor. Although the sharks just swim (no performing tricks), I couldn't help but wonder how the movement of the water on the road between fairs affected their metabolism/health. Couldn't help but feel that was just as cruel as chaining up elephants (which I believe some zoos still do, right?).

How about if we all here at ZooChat try to do something for this abused elephant at the Greek circus?

I have e-mailed the two leading tabloids in my country about it, supplying them with the link to YouTube. I wrote in a very polite tone, thanking them for having raised issues like this one before.

Why don´t you all do the same, please! It´ll only take five minutes of your time.

If the story catches fire SOMEWHERE, it will spread globally and eventually, perhaps, do some good?

Five minutes of your time? Please!

Thanks guys! Anyone else?

Oh... another idea! Mail the link to the Greek Embassy in your country! Please do! I will do it in a minute. Remember to be polite, that is important.

Good work, blackpanther! Thank you so very much! One of the wonderful things about the internet is that sometimes a few determined individuals REALLY can make a difference. It happens! The more the word is spread about this sickening video, the greater the chances are that someone in authority will do something about it!
