Local Zoos:
Werribee Open Range Zoo (30 min drive)
Melbourne Zoo (5 min drive)
How often do I visit?
I’m a volunteer at WORZ, so once per month volunteering but as a general visitor probably once every 2 months - more often in summer though as I work less and there is no football on.
I live closer to MZ so I go at least once per month, but more often in summer.
What triggers a visit?
Usually my partner actually - we are both really into animal photography and she often suggests it if she feels like taking photos. We like going to the national parks in India for photography so if we have any upcoming India trip we will go to the zoos more often in the lead up to get some extra practice.
I usually suggest going if there is a new animal or a recent birth etc.
I will always go if a friend or family member wants to go to the zoo too. Any excuse is a good excuse…
How early will I get up to go?
Both zoos open at 9am, so I get up at 7.30 for WORZ and 8 for MZ.
How long do I stay?
Depends on the day - anything from 2 hour to all day. Depends on other commitments or the weather.
How much of the zoo do I cover?
If we’re there to practice photography I will usually focus (pardon the pun) on 3-4 animals. Sometimes only the snow leopards at MZ! However if we’re there and not really in the mood to photograph anything in particular we will wander around and see as much as we feel like.
How many photos do I take?
Heaps - depends how full the memory card is though, or how much the battery is charged… I’m far better organised with this stuff when it’s not the local zoos.
Do I eat at the zoo restaurant?
Yes - most of the time. The food and coffee at our zoos is particularly good.
Actually most Australian zoos serve good food: we were on holiday in Batemans Bay for about a week, so we bought memberships to Mogo Zoo - partly because we like the food at their cafe. We went there every day for lunch (and to see the animals).
