So what I want to know what happened to these or where they were in the zoo. That include the following:
- Second Common Eland group
- Red Squirrel
- Senegal Galago
- Bolivian Squirrel Monkey
- Fennec Fox
- Geoffroy's Tamarin
- Impala (question in the bottom)
- Guernsey Cattle
- Chinese Painted Quail
- Greater Hill Mynah
- Kori Bustard
- Red Billed Hornbill (and that is all)
Question: Were the Impala allowed to go in the Giraffe paddock? In the 1977 guidebook it shows a picture of them grazing.
As Okapis has already clarified, Marwell only kept eland once as the intended second ones never arrived.
Red squirrel (1997/1998) were in a purpose built cage on the higher level of the Walled Garden (the first cage nearest the Hall).
Senegal galago (1998 to 2000) went straight into the then incomplete Night Life prior to it being opened in 1999.
Bolivian squirrel monkeys. Marwell kept common squirrel monkeys (Samuri sciurus) from 1983 onwards, for almost every year until 2020.. But they had no squirrel monkeys at the start of 2004 and the annual report says 3 common squirrel monkeys and 1 Bolivian squirrel monkey arrived that year and, slightly mysteriously, 2 Bolivian squirrel monkeys left during the same year. I can only suspect that one of the new common squirrel monkeys had been correctly re-identified as a Bolivian. I think around this time they were on the Black Swan pond island but squirrel monkeys had been kept elsewhere around the Zoo.
Fennec fox. There is a reference that this species was kept in 1998, but it is not listed in the Annual Report for that year. Do you have any other information? 1998 would make sense as that year would fit in with the creation of Night Life, opened the next year.
Geoffrey's tamarin (1983-1992) would have been in the range of cages in the back garden of the Hall.
Impala; location has already been answered. My understanding is that they were found to carry TB hence the need to avoid close contact with other ungulates. They were, for most of the time, therefore kept in the house and hardstand. I suspect that they would not have beeneasy animals to move from the paddock back into the hardstand and housing.
Guernsey cow. 1998 only. She was kept in a "zero grazing shelter" in Encounter Village to promote the "Send a Cow" African charity work.
Chinese painted quail. At Marwell from 2003 to 2008 but I cannot recall where, so will be interested if someone can provide the answer.
Greater hill mynah. Arrived in 1982 but location also unknown.
Kori bustard (1977-1980), located, as previously stated, in the former cheetah paddock area.
Red-billed hornbill were initially (1977) kept in with pheasants at the Pheasantry (located opposite the recent bush dog enclosure) before moving elsewhere.
