What is the coolest animal to see at the zoo?

I'd maybe agree if it were an uncommon species like Malaysn tapirs, but to be honest the standard South American tapir is so commonplace in zoos where I am that they just end up blending into the background, same with meerkat, otters, lemurs and red pandas, but that's just from my experience.
Well in a world wide sense Malayan can be found on both continents whereas South American is only commonly found on one. Also commonplace doesn’t make animals less exciting to see, meerkats are always a joy to watch. Them being common in zoos doesn’t take away how cool they are.

What is it with you and hipposo_O:D?
I have no favorites to see, maybe elephants.

I loved their bulk, strength, and aggresiveness. They are truly one of a kinf in animal kingdom. I loved how many people perceive them as a lazy slow being only to realize how deadly they can be. I just loved EVERYTHING about hippos.

Admittedly I do get what you’re saying here, most zoos I’ve been to have Brazilian tapirs, they’re very common, however despite this I still never get tired of seeing them. Perhaps part of it is that most people ignore them due to them not being a big name or something that people recognise, so they always feel like a ‘hidden gem’ when surrounded by normal humans? Just a theory, but for some reason seeing a tapir is still just as exciting as always.

Tapirs are pretty cool indeed! And I say this even after being peed on by a tapir when I was a kid hahahahahaahahah

I also love them very much for the same reason, but a zoo is definitely also complete without hippos. Hippos are a very nice 'extra', but to say a zoo is nothing without them is a bit of an exaggeration;).

Almost zoos that I've ever been through had hippos. And I always take great joy in seeing them. Zoos that don't are rather incomplete for me.

Anything rare is exciting. I'm also a sucker for cats of any sort. Primates are really cool too because they tend to be very active and social with each other, they're always fun to watch if you're not particularly a big fan of primates.

I find any animals to be enjoyable to see, but I really liked seeing rare small mammals (Like cuscus and tree-kangaroo) and animals that I haven't seen before (Like brown hyena and wombat)

A question of curiosity, does this include aquariums and bird parks and such? Or just zoos in the typical sense?

Zoos in typical sense, as the only aquarium I know that holds hippos is Adventure Aquarium, and it'll be a while before I can step on American lands, so I also enjoy aquariums. But zoos with no hippos are mostly a no go for me.

I love seeing any new species but all species are interesting in their own right, except the quantity of meerkats (126 UK holdings is a tad excessive in my opinion)

I'm a featherfin fan, so I would nominate a courting male Cyathophrynx. There are many species/races with different colour patterns, but the mature males are all stunningly beautiful. I have never seen this is a zoo, but I have never forgotten watching it in the fish house of an aquarist friend. There are quite a few videos available, see for example
