Does anyone have any knowledge of this place? From thier leaflet, and form the internet, I can't work out how much of a zoo is there, and how much it is a children's playpark. Has anyone been? Is it worth a trip, bearing in mind the wealth of other zoos in the Netherlands? Thanks in advance for any comments.

I have never been there, but i heared some stories about it. It has very few animals. In the future they want to expand that offcourse. I get the impression that for now it's more a plant and flower park than a zoo. (i believe they have ringtailed lemur, demoiselle crane, flamingo, racoons, that kind of species.) So i would say that it's not worth spending time at unless you accidently drive by it ;)

As far as i know, they (Zodiac Zoos) bought a childrens play garden called "labyrinth of senses" where children could play and do small games with their senses (spot animals/plants, smell things and feel objects). They opened four exhibits with lesser flamingo, demoiselle crane, small clawed otters and white storks on the other side of the road, and as i've understood have struggled with the local gouvernment eversince to get anything more added to the park. Afaik sofar they are not budging an ince, so no new animals will be added in the short term.

So if any of those four species makes you drive around specially for it then be my guest, but i highly doubt you'll find anything shocking (zoo-wise anyways, perhaps you'd be able to bring kids and have fun nonetheless...).

The only small thing worth mentioning (which made me check their website quite a lot) was that their "group" (i believe 3.1) of lesser flamingos were nesting earlier this year, but nothing happened...

I hope to visit this zoo this Summer. Because it's very small I take the opportunity to mix my visit to the zoo with a visit to the train museum of Haaksbergen. If anyone of you will ever visit Holland maybe this is a good tip. The steam train from Haaksbergen to Boekelo stops right in front of the zoo (station "Zoutindustrie"). If you buy a return you can come by steam train from Haaksbergen to the zoo, visit the zoo, and returns to Haaksbergen by the same steam train. If you have some kids they will love it.
