Does anyone know what bird of prey species this is?
I think it's a kind of Harrier, but I can't find it in any of my books. There was no signage on the aviary.
Photo was taken 01.07.09.

This is indeed a harrier, possibly a male Marsh Harrier. Cannot comment more now, as I don't have any global raptor book at hand.

PS. Bonelli's Eagle has feathered tibia.

I would agree, tentatively (though the head and beak remind me a bit of a northern goshawk). I've sent the image to our falconry mentor for confirmation.

Happy travels.

Thats what I did, asked somebody else as I was confused! I visited the ICBP a few months ago and cannot recall this Bird, they also have no mention of a Marsh Harrier in their "collection" Perhaps this is a wild rehab Bird?

Just got a reply back from our bird lady. Her thought is similar to mine in that we both guessed 'goshawk.' Here's a link with a similar-looking specimen.

More specifically, she believes this may be a young bird. I'm going to go along with this because the coloring looks so very similar. However, I would be curious as to what the Center says they have (translation: I'm hoping whoever visits there next will ask).

Happy travels.

I was at Newent a couple of weeks ago and this aviary is now labelled - there are two birds; one is a Pied Harrier (Circus melanoleucos) and the other is a Hen Harrier (Circus cyaneus). Both were firsts for me.

I think this is the Hen Harrier, but if you want confirmation just email the photo to Jemima - she's always excellent at replying (the email address is on the ICBP website).

Species has been identified by Ms Parry-Jones as a Female Pied Harrier (Circus melanoleucus).

I visited today . All looking very tidy now , apparently it was very run down when Jemima P-J returned less than 2 years ago . Quite a few 2010 bred young - the UK first Stellers's Sea eagle with its parents ; a Eurasian Griffon Vulture with one leg with several pins , possibly a break ; 2 Steppe Eagles : lots of owls including 2 Spectacled , 4 Snowy and several Ural .

The 2pm flying display was excellent , J P-J flew 2 falcons , the second performed 3 amazing stoops from a great height , one of the best falcons ( though not in her top 5 ) she has flown .
