Even though I only visited it once, it was 5 years ago (wow, it's really been that long?), and it was during a business trip where I ended up with a free day due to unforeseen circumstances (so I did not have my camera), it instantly became my favorite zoo, it left a lasting impression on me that really inspired me to visit more zoos, and I remember my experience so fondly.
The zoo in question? Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo. I loved its exhibits, its huge and diverse collection, especially for reptiles, and just how much it has changed since my visit. My favorite part of that zoo was, without any doubt, Kingdoms of the Night. It's unlike any exhibit I have ever experienced, with how it just winds its way through darkness, never seeming to end. The Swamp at the end was the definite highlight, one of the most unique exhibits I've ever seen.
Runner-ups include Zoo Atlanta, North Carolina, and Jacksonville.
My favorite aquarium is the Tennessee Aquarium. No contest. Its collection is absolutely unique among aquariums and is one of the most comprehensive collections of freshwater wildlife you will ever see. The real crowning jewel of the facility, and my favorite part about it, was its turtle collection. As a HUGE turtle fan, I felt like I was in heaven with just how many turtles I saw throughout the facility (I spent an unhealthy amount of time in the Delta Country gallery). River Giants was also great; having just finished watching River Monsters, seeing all those big fish in one place was absolutely surreal.
Runner-ups include the Georgia and Florida aquariums, the latter of which is the source of the image I took this my current avatar.
