What mammals can i own in south island New Zealand

I am moving to New Zealand permanently for work and was wondering what animals I can own and I have 2 animals I already own and don't know if they are allowed into New Zealand
the animals i already have are
A Hamster
Shingleback lizard

The animals i want
Chinchilla
Hedgehog

I was wondering if people sell hedgehogs and chinchillas privately if they are available

Dont think anyone breeds hedgehogs, but you could take a rescue, but they are invasive, can carry pathogens and are wild animals at the end of the day so do not make the best pets

Chinchillas are common-ish and cost a few hundred bucks, though they are banned in Southland (the most southern part of the south island) so unless you are moving there you should be able to get one

This is a question that you should do your own research on the local laws to answer, rather than ask a bunch of internet strangers from around the world that may or may not give factual information.

While @joe99 is from New Zealand and gave an accurate answer, I fully agree with you.

I saw the question the day it was posted and couldn’t be bothered to answer because it came across as laziness. The OP could easily have searched the question themselves.

Several people a year create an account, ask one question and then are never seen again (i.e. contribute nothing to the forum). This appears to be yet another example of that and something I personally find irritating.
