What was the biggest lie that you ever heard from anti-zoo people?

Ok, so I was having an argument/debate with someone that held anti-zoo viewpoints and I said to her, "If it were not for zoos, there are several species that would be extinct, those being the Arabian oryx, Scimitar horned oryx, Addax, Dama gazelle, Pere David's deer, Mexican gray wolf, Black-footed ferret, California condor, Mauritius pink pigeon, and Socorro dove amongst others." and she said to me "Oh your just making that up, these animals don't actually exist. They sound like something from movies or comic books" and then she went on to say to me "You don't even like animals, you just like them for scientific purposes" and I found that incredibly offensive. It may not have been a lie per say, but it was accusations of me lying to fit a narrative. Again, I was incredibly offended by that!

I honestly do my best to debate but with certain people it turns into an issue of ego. This girl seems like she has built her personality around hating zoos and being this "eco-warrior" who "fights" for the animals. To change her opinion would feel like changing her personality to her and that's why she refuses to even consider zoos as a positive thing. If she backs down now it'd be a massive blow to her ego and that's why a lot of people struggle accepting their view is wrong. You'll see this with anti-vaxxers and Covid deniers as well, even as they cough up their lungs they still can't admit they were wrong.

What I would say in that situation is look them up if you don't believe me, your phone is right there

hahahahahahahaha made up animals, she could've just googled one or another... And yes, it was very offensive of her to say that. I think that some of these people who fight for animals but are anti-zoo like animals just for the "cute purpose", that is, they care too much about dogs, cats, cows (the more mainstream animals) and fail to see the wider picture of wildlife preservation. Sure, finding home for stray animals is great, but we need much more than that when talking about really preserving our planet's biodiversity.

Spot on my friend.

Are horses and donkeys as damaging as feral cats? I haven't heard much about them in regards to ecological effects.
Potentially worse in many areas. Huge, quickly reproducing herbivores with few predators. The only place where feral Horses and Donkeys occur and aren't a problem is in places where wild equines occurred in historical times, such as many parts of Europe. In North America and Australia they have devastated huge areas by eating away all of the vegetation.

Honestly, I would have called her an idiot (along with a few words that are not allowed on the forum) as well as laughed at her. Then I would tell her to look one of the animals up like @Mr.Ivory and then left (that is if I was in control of my anger management stuff). Honestly, a lot of these people say and do things, but when questioned about it, ether have false evidence or no evidence/reasoning as to why they said/did it. Fortunately there are a lot of people who do like zoos.

I was certainly thinking about it, but as hurt and offended as I was, I decided to bite my tongue and brush it off instead. I did want to let her have it!

Once you have called someone an idiot (along with a few additional insults) you have ended the debate. Too late then to influence her thinking.

My former English Teacher always use to say that all captive dolphins were Wild-Caught, My blood boiled every time she mentioned this, I'd usually just stick my head in my bag and pretend I was looking for something :confused:
Why is it always english teachers who talk about these things?

I would be able to control myself in that situation

There was a perfect opportunity missed, imo.We must choose between wallowing in our own self-righteousness or educating a fool.

You had someone who feels she cares about animals (enough to have an opinion about zoos) yet is so poorly educated, so ignorant that she says these things. She probably knows nothing of the extinction crisis. Animals she thought were fictitious have lived and died and disappeared without her even knowing they ever were. That is ONE reason for zoos right there! You could have worked with her interest and ignorance to look up and SHOW HER , say, Arabian oryx and wow her with how amazing they are. THEN explain how they still walk the earth because of the work of zoos and conservationists.
Engage her heart and her mind. You might have accomplished something
