Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden What's Gnu at the Cincinnati Zoo? - 2012

Turns out that plans have since changed, and Rizzo will instead be going to the Hogle Zoo for the opening of their new exhibit, Rocky Shores.

In other news, on the travel website, Ten Best, the Cincinnati Zoo is currently ranking second in the poll for the "Best Zoos" Travel Award. The Columbus Zoo is ranking first.

And were in 2nd. I was told by a worker in the elephant house that the no female will most likely successfully breed with Little One because he is getting too old. Also, do you think we'll get another one?

Well it looks like we posted at the same time!

I knew the white tigers were going to be a part of the new exhibit. The white tigers are both in their teens, so the zoo is just providing them a good home until they pass on. Both enclosures will be used for the Malayan Tigers after their deaths.

The plans for Africa on the zoo's website have changed:

The original Phase III has been split into two separate phases. Phase III will include exhibits for cheetahs and lions, as well as the African themed restaurant and event hall. It is planned for a spring 2013 opening.

Phase IV will be the mixed hoofstock exhibit with zebras, gazelles, ostriches, Marabou Storks, and Grey-crowned Cranes.

Phase V, the final phase, will include the exhibit for Nile Hippopotamuses, as well as crocodiles, which are new to the plans.

There is no mention of the wild dogs, baboons, aviary, or kopje that were originally a part of the plan.

Doesn't sound very exciting now at all.

It will be interesting to see what becomes of the current lion and zebra enclosures once they move to new ones in Africa.

I hope they don't ditch the kudu, eland, bontebok and baboons. The crocodile addition sounds great. This better not end up looking like Toledo's African exhibit that has giraffes, zebras, a few antelope and lots of fake sculptures/lame theming.

I agree. The large antelope and the baboons would be unfortunate losses. Especially the kudu ;) I could really see the baboons as being a very successful exhibit. A lively troop with various ages would be a great crowd pleaser.

Hopefully the theming will be well done, but not overbearing. The drawings don't suggest an overbearing theme, and there has been little done with the first two phases.

The Penguin Parades have been cancelled until further notice due to construction. There haven't been any parades for about a week now because of the warm weather.

The zoo has created six zoo valentines for children to print off and take to school featuring the zoo's animals. There are cards featuring giraffes, aardwolves, polar bears, lions, penguins, and flamingos.

I know there have been several topics about zoo gift shops and what is sold in them. The Cincinnati Zoo has several specialty items sold at their gift shops including:
-Red panda paw paintings
-Tagua nut jewelry
-Hand-blown glass animals
-Peri-Peri hot sauce

These are the specialty items listen on their website, but I'll have to take note of others the next time I visit the zoo.

Is it true, Cincinnati Zoo has published a new guidebook in 2011 ? If yes, how much is it ? It would be a little wonder, because also Philadelphia Zoo has published a new guidebook last year.

@Fuzzball- I haven't heard anything about one on the zoo's Facebook page or website. I don't normally visit the gift shops, so I haven't seem one if there is one.

The proposed opening dates for the three remaining phases are as follows:

Phase III (Lions, Cheetahs, & Restaurant) - Summer of 2013
Phase IV (Mixed Hoofstock) - Summer of 2014
Phase V (Nile Hippos & Nile Crocs) - Summer of 2015

I'm sorry but I am not impressed and it is very disappointing.

I am disappointed that the baboons and wild dogs seem to have been removed from the plans, however the lions and zebras moving to an exhibit in Africa will help to create a slice of the zoo that is actually laid out geographically. I think it is much to early to say that you are "not impressed." Phase III, the phase that will really establish the exhibit, is hardly into the construction phase! I still have high hopes for this exhibit.

Sumatran rhino 'Suci'

Has the Zoo put out any recent information on plans/proposed breeding for the female Sumatran rhino 'Suci'?

About the part with Andean Condors being released into the wild, is there any news about the 2 condors that came from Beardsley to be released into the wild?

Could you check it out next time you're going to the Zoo ? That would be great!

I will certainly try and check it out for you. Hopefully I will get to the zoo before Penguin Days are over.

The African Wild Dogs are still in the plans for Africa, but the kopje is still up in the air according to a post on the zoo's Facebook page. There may or may not be an aviary, but there will be a lot of birds.

Where does it say that?
