I'll be at the zoo tomorrow, so I'm charging up my camera batteries in hopes of some good shots of little Bogart. I was hoping that the Grevy's Zebra mare would foal in enough time for the foal to be out tomorrow, but unfortunately she did not.

I spent a lovely couple of hours at the zoo today. The weather was perfect, and the animals were very active!
Now for the news and observations:
There is a new Alligator Snapping Turtle in the small pond in the greenhouse of Manatee Springs. It's quite a bit smaller than the one in the tank in the main building, but still of impressive size!
Manjula, the zoo's second Indian Rhinoceros, was on exhibit today. She is quite easily the most beautiful Indian Rhinoceros I have ever seen. Her horn is spectacular, as is her coloration; she is of a rather reddish-grey color. I don't think I ever seen an Indian Rhinoceros that is of that color. The long tufts of hair on her ears are also fantastic. Unfortunately I could not get a photograph of her. The zoo was packed with school groups and young families today, and I could not get close enough to snap a quality photo before she turned and went back inside.
It appears that the Greater Flamingo yard in Rhino Reserve has expanded and renovated. It is looking quite nice.
Though the Okapi and Eastern Bongo yards were blocked off due to construction, I could see that grass has grown in quite well in both of the yards. No longer do they appear to be dreary dust bowls.
The Lesser Adjutants were not on display in Jungle Trail today; Pied Imperial Pigeons were in the aviary normally inhabited by the adjutants. I do not know if this is temporary or permanent. Hopefully it is only temporary.
Grass has really grown up nicely in the Pink-backed Pelican and Saddlebill Stork enclosure. It's looking very lush.
The Angolan Colobuses were not on display; there was a sign in the exhibit saying, "Animals temporarily off exhibit."
The Bald Eagle was not on exhibit in the aviary in Lord's of the Arctic. The glass window was taped off, but there was still a Barred Owl in the enclosure.
I finally saw the Matamata again. I believe this only the third or fourth time I've seen it in all of my trips to the zoo over the years.
There were quite a few changes in Wings of the World as well.
Harp wire has been put up in front of the grassland display, and the Blue-breasted Kingfisher has been removed.
Several interesting things have happened to the song bird aviaries. The song bird aviaries have been sectioned off into three new aviaries: two smaller ones on each end and one larger one in the middle. All of the former dividers between the aviaries were removed, and new ones have been put in to define the new areas. Now when you enter that part of the building you are met with a small, darkened enclosure for Feathertail Gliders with signage showing the similarities and differences between them and birds. Then comes the larger aviary in the middle which is home to the Scarlet-chested Parrots, Bourke's Parakeets, and Gouldian Finches; all of which formerly had their own, separate aviaries. Finally is another smaller aviary, the same size as the enclosure for the Feathertail Gliders for the Blue-breasted Kingfisher.
Grass has really been starting to take over in a lot of the enclosures around the zoo! Not only has it grown in in the Eastern Bong and Okapi yards and the Pink-backed Pelican and Saddlebill Stork enclosure, but it is also growing in in both of the elephant yards!
Jati was in the bull yard with Sabu for breeding again today, as she was on my last visit back in April. Hopefully she will take, and in a few years time we will hear the pitter-patter of little elephant feet in Cincinnati for the first time since 1998!
Ipuh was outside today in Wildlife Canyon. This was the first time in quite a long time that I've seen him out. Well, "outside" is a little bit of an overstatement; he took a few steps outside and turned around and went back in. He came back out again, but not much further than he did the first time. For the first time in a long time I heard the fascinating vocalizations of the Sumatran Rhinoceros; once Ipuh went back inside he or Suci one began clicking and squealing. It was an amazing experience.
Along with the Grevy's Zebra mare, one of the Red River Hog sows is expecting and due soon.
Bogart and Saarai were out-and-about in their yard today, and I do have to say that he's quite adorable.

As for the snapping turtle in Manatee Springs, that's been there since the summer of last year. And has always been harp wire to keep the birds from escaping in the Grasslands exhibit.

I too am glad to see the Feathertail Gliders on exhibit again; I didn't necessarily expect them to turn up in Wings of the World, but it's still nice to see them again.

Vertical, very thin wire that was separated about 2 inches or less from each other and was very un-noticeable?

I have not been in the building since last April, but I do not seem to remember seeing the wire then or before that. Perhaps it was there, and I was just utterly oblivious to it until now. It's a possibility
I love how it is extremely close to looking like it's not even there. Kind of wish they would do for the montane display. How does the kingfisher exhibit look? Do you think it was better off in the grasslands exhibit?
I do believe that the kingfisher was better off in the grasslands display. It's new aviary is quite small, but I have a feeling it was moved due to complications between it and the smaller birds in the aviary. Personally I would like to see the kingfisher moved to the aviary in the African building in Jungle Trails. It would fit in much better there.
Maybe even better outdoors too. Are the exhibits still a darkened setting? hope not
