Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden What's Gnu at the Cincinnati Zoo? - 2012

Florida manatee, "Wooten", moves to Florida in preparation for his eventual release into the wild:
Wooten, the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden’s 630-pound Florida manatee has arrived in Florida, safe and sound! After arriving at the Cincinnati Zoo two years ago, Wooten is returning to the wild as part of the US Fish & Wildlife Service’s (USFWS) Manatee Rescue, Rehabilitation and Release Program. Visitor’s last chance to see Wooten at the Zoo’s Otto M. Budig Family Foundation Manatee Springs exhibit was Sunday, November 4.

The cheetah cub, "Savanna", will be on the Today Show tomorrow morning at 7:30 a.m.
The Cincinnati Zoo’s Director, Thane Maynard and Savanna the 4-month-old cheetah, will appear on the NBC Today Show in New York, NY (local WLWT) tomorrow morning, Thursday, November 8 at approximately 7:30 a.m. The Zoo will be Live Tweeting Savanna’s journey to the Big Apple on Twitter. Follow along @cincinnatizoo #cheetahNYC.

The Cincinnati Zoo partnered with National Geographic Magazine to capture the first-ever slow motion, high definition video of a cheetah running. The footage can be seen in the November iPad and iPhone editions of National Geographic Magazine. During the shoot, Sarah, the Zoo’s eldest cheetah, broke the land speed record—racing 100 meters in 5.95 seconds!

The Zoo’s next sprinter in training, Savanna, was born at the Zoo’s off-site cheetah breeding facility during the film shoot. She will start running for the public, small distances, next spring in the Cincinnati Zoo’s Cheetah Encounter.

National Geographic Magazine approached the Cincinnati Zoo because it is a leader in cheetah conservation and is one of only 4 facilities in the US that has a cheetah breeding facility.

Interesting facts about the shoot:
• The high definition digital cinema camera that was used to capture these never-before-seen shots had a speed of 1,200 frames/second.
• The brightest continuous lights in the world were used: 150,000 watts for an 8-second burst.
• The Magazine literally set up a “movie” set with 25 crew members from Hollywood action films (many said this was their most challenging project!)
• The shoot lasted 3 days, using 5 of the Cincinnati Zoo’s cheetahs- they shot very early in the morning and in the evening, allowing the cheetahs to rest during the hottest points in the day.

Behind the scenes videos and stills of the shoot are available by request.

The zoo has uploaded a video about the new arctic foxes:

The zoo has also uploaded a video about the closing of the Zoo Café for the renovation into the restaurant for Africa. It also has some nice shots of the construction of Africa:

Very nice Arctic Fox exhibit.

Lucky for me I might be going to the zoo in about 8 months so mabye I'll be able to see all the new exhibits around the time it first opens.:D

Went to the zoo again today. There were a few changes.
-Black rat snake in the Reptile House was renovated [have a photo]
-A slide was added in the clouded leopard exhibit.
-There are Amazon milk frog tadpoles.
-Padmae the aardvark moved back in her old pen, Blakely moved in the back area, Penelope a bat-eared fox is in the smaller one, and sadly Don and Tom replaced Lucy the bearcat :(.
-Giant African Millipedes are where the Amazonian millipedes were.
-Timber rattlesnakes moved back into the Palmetto Scrub in Manatee Springs, now a Florida pine snake lives in where it used to be.
-The eastern gulfcoast waterdog was taken out [not the misquitofish] and baby yellow-bellied sliders were added.
-Magnificent flower beetles now coexist with the yellow-bellied beetles.
-The white-naped ravens are back out.

Thank you for the update Cinzoo man. I hope to visit before too long myself. It's been a little while, and I want to see all of the newer babies before they get too big.

Were there any signs stating when the Reptile House will be closing for renovation? I was just thinking about this the other day.

That is an interesting enrichment item for them...

It's nice to see them back again. They're an interesting species to observe. The ravens must be "winter only" inhabitants of Jungle Trails.

There were no signs about the Reptile House except the one put up in the summer.

Hmm... I wonder if it will be later on in the winter then? After the Festival Lights perhaps?

The reindeer herd has arrived and is in place for the Festival of Lights. Tomorrow is the member's preview, and the festival officially starts on Friday.

What zoos hold Reindeer year round? I've been to two zoos that display the species but only in the winter (Beardsley and ZooAmerica).

There are not a lot, but there are a good few out there. Columbus and Cleveland both have permanent reindeer/caribou displays. Minnesota, Milwaukee, and San Diego are three others that I can think of right off the top of my head.
