Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden What's Gnu at the Cincinnati Zoo - 2014

None whatsoever.

It is all well an good this AI research, but nothing beats maintaining a bull rhino (with AI perhaps on the side). TBH: I do not say that in hindsight … I have always and continue to believe so … that too much emphasis is laid on AI (it is only a stop gap measure IMO).

This is the 30th if not 31st day for hoofstock quarantine and this could be the day they go out. I'm at the zoo with my camera so I'll be on the lookout.

Did she have two calves by AI ? One DNS/stillbirth and the more recent one that died the first day? Is that correct?

I'm seeing Hakam (male wild dog) for the first time today, he is much more adventurous than Imara. He swims, comes up to the glass, and is barking to Imara from behind the scenes.

Given the... issues... with the ostriches, I'm not quite sure that the hoofstock will be today, but I mean, I could be wrong.

Speaking of the ostriches, a rock barrier has had to be added in front of the viewing area closest to the painted dogs because the ostriches have been too friendly...

And yes, Haka is much more active than Imara, and it's a been a joy to watch him explore the enclosure. He really loves the water. His keepers say that when they give him a bowl of water to drink from, he always ends up just splashing in it. I've been stationed there lately, so I've had quite a bit of time to observe him.

There is a new species in World of the Insect: Pachycondyla villosa, the Texas Bullet Ant, or the Hairy Panther Ant. They replaced the Honeypot Ants.

The only Grey's Crowned Guenons in the hemisphere are back on exhibit.

Technically they're the only Grey's Crowned Guenons outside of their native range afaik (ssp-wise anyhow). Another subspecies of the Crested Mona Monkey is kept at the Twycross Zoo in the UK, but that's it for the species.

So is this the old pair, the new pair, or a new, mixed pair? What happened breeding wise?

You'll get the real answer tomorrow but for now I believe this is a mixed group based off of what I've been told.

Here's the real answer and like I was you might be disappointed: The group that is currently out is not new and it consists of 2 females and a male who cannot breed. There are two more females that are kept off exhibit and they are introducing them by putting the second group in separate outdoor cages (the outdoor cage is located directly behind the outdoor exhibit).

So the zoo has 1.4 but the male can't breed? Damn.....

There are 3 new ducks in the Wetlands Wings of the World exhibit. I have a photo and I will need help identifying them.

Edit: False alarm, they are the Layson Ducks.

A "This Exhibit is Being Upgraded" sign has gone up in the Siberian Lynx exhibit. Because there is nothing that can be done to that cage, I wouldn't be surprised of he just passed.

Well they could potentially make it taller. I'd like to see them give this to a small species. Perhaps move the Fossa out here? They'd have to renovate it a little of course.

The Fossa exhibit is larger inside and I bet if they were renovated the cage completely then there would be at least something that would block people from going up close to the exhibit.
