Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden What's Gnu at the Cincinnati Zoo - 2014

While I agree that the camels may be more charismatic, they're also a domesticated species and thus should go in favor of the actual wild species, one of which is Endangered and has a historical significance for the zoo.

Okay, so this is just an idea, but could the zoo not remove the foliage blocking the old off-show Sumatran Rhino yard from the public eye and then use that for another species? I mean, it's forested and could make for a great edition to the exhibit.

They definitely could with ease. There's only a few vines in the way and if it were to be used in the future it would be perfect because there are trees that cover the entire yard, barely letting a lot of sunlight touching the ground.

No Zoo in Ohio currently exhibit Tapirs therefore we would be all for any species of tapir moving into this exhibit.

If Cincinnati could get a female tapir they should angle to get Toronto's male. We have a genetically valuable male Malayasian Tapir who is going to waste here. We no longer have room for a female and breeding after our babirusa needed a new home.

Thane Maynard talks about the African wild dog enclosure that will be a part of the fourth phase of Africa, which opens this summer.

Also, on a side note, he specifically mentions Thomson's gazelles when discussing the species out on the main savanna that the African wild dog enclosure will overlook. This is the first time the specific species of gazelle has been mentioned.

According to the Zoo Babies sign in front of the Reptile House, Gaboon Vipers were just recently born.

Changes from two weeks ago:

Reptile House:
-The baby Gaboon Viper took over the Black Rat Snake exhibit.
-The Thai Red Mountain Rat Snake exhibit was renovated to give it more room.

-The Japanese Macaques on Monkey Island were off exhibited today.

Gorilla World
-The Grey's Crowned Guenons are still off exhibit despite the fact that their neighbors, the colobus monkeys, are on display.

Bear Hill
-The Spectacled and American Black Bears switched exhibits.

World of the Insect
-Giant African Millipedes (Zoo Babies) took over the V Vietnamese Centipede Exhibit
-The baby Emperor Scorpions took over the Redknee Tarantula exhibit.
-Antilles Tree Spiders (Zoo Babies and a new species) took over the Flat Rock Scorpion Exhibit.
-The Tin Foil Beetles were moved to the Domino Beetle Exhibit.
-The Flat Rock Scorpion was moved to the Togo Starburst Tarantula exhibit (the tarantula was taken off).
-The Butterfly Aviary is back open. There are new glass ceiling panels, the signage was taken down, the 8 inch or so tall glass fence was replaced with log fencing, and much, much more butterflies were added.

Manatee Springs
-The American Alligator exhibit is being renovated. They are probably just cleaning out the pond since it was drained.

Wings of the World
-White-winged Scoters (a new species) were added to the Arctic Sea Cliffs exhibit.

Children's Zoo
-The zoo has a new Aardvark in the nursery named Ali. She isn't just any typical Aardvark, she's a pregnant Aardvark!
-The shortcut by Flamingo Cove is finally opened after being fenced off for 4 years.
-Because of the new location of the Blakely's Barnyard Show, the barn animals (donkeys, llama, alpaca, goats, sheep, and cattle) can only be seen when shows are presented.

Jungle Trails
-The baby Sifaka that was born in November was named Andri.

Africa
-Extra rock work was added between the Hoofstock and Lion enclosures to lower the chances of one of them being eaten.

Thane Maynard introduces the zoo's five three-and-four-week-old kea chicks:

He also mentions a renovation of the zoo's Lorikeet Landing into a new interactive flight cage that will feature interactive games and activities with some of the birds - including the keas.

The mixed-species savannah is on track for a late-June opening, but the African wild dog and meerkat exhibits are behind schedule due to weather delays and will likely open at a later date.

I was going to mention that in my next update since neither of the exhibits look anywhere close to finished.

Africa:
-A ten foot wide dirt and rock wall has been added between the lion and hoofstock exhibits. It makes both habitats look less attractive but it's better to be safe than sorry.

World of the Insect
-There are 3 new species on display, Common Diving Beetle, Whirligig Beetle, and Indian Ornamental Tarantula.

Manatee Springs
-The alligator pond has been filled back up but the gator is still absent.

-This is the first week that the Ring - tailed lemurs are back outside.

Jungle Trails
-So far the Congo Peafowl have been the only animal left in the past few weeks that hasn't been put in their outdoor enclosure yet.
