Zoo Basel what's happening at Basel?

Indian rhino baby born!

Great news! An indian rhino baby was born at Zoo Basel on July 23, 2010. It's a little girl called Henna. Mummy Ellora, 28, and her baby Henna are doing very well.

Ape House renovations

Is there any recent news of the construction of the ape house?

There are photos on Flickr (go Basel Zoo gorilla) of the Gorillas since they returned to the Zoo. It seems only one of their three indoor cages has been extended backwards, now about double its original depth, and fitted out with woodchip floor(which they don't like apparently- its a new surface for them) and new concrete 'trees'. The mesh backdrop is similar to the other cages which look exactly the same as before, giving them an 'L' shaped area.

I do not know if similar indoor extensions were made for Orangutans and Chimps- or nothing?

Outdoors is currently just a construction site. The plans show five large outside cages, so not sure how many will be allocated to each group of Apes. Due for completion in 2012.

I have posted similar in the 'European Gorillas' thread.

Wamburbutuh and Quma the former Pygmy Hippos

Does anybody have any information about Quma and Wamburtuhuh the pair of Pygmy hippos now at South lakes wild animal park in the UK? The type of information I'm looking for is when were they born, to who and where?

Why is this in a Basel thread?

According to the pygmy hippo studbook:-

female ‘Quma’ was born in Zurich on 21 May 1990 (father ‘Grebbo’; mother ‘Wanna’); she arrived at South Lakes on 23 December 2004.

male ‘Wamburuhto’ was born in Rotterdam on 29th October 2003 (father ’Leipi’; mother ‘Monica’); he arrived at South Lakes on 12th March 2005.

Hope this information is useful.

Thanks Tim, is the studbook online?

You’re welcome.

Unfortunately I don’t think the studbook is available on-line. When I was last in Basle, a couple of years ago, I bought copies of both the Indian rhinoceros and pygmy hippo studbooks in the zoo shop. (I wish that more zoos sold copies of the studbooks they publish in the zoo shop!)

I thought South lakes recieved the pair from Basel?

To be precise, the female was born in Zurich, was sent to Basle, returned to Zurich and was then sent to South Lakes.

I don't believe that the males was ever at Basle (at least, not according to the studbook).

2011 was the busiest year ever in the history of Basel zoo, with the zoo receiving 1'753'508 visitors.

That's very good. I wish we heard more from Basel, I do like it. I think it's an excellent example of a good zoo in a limited city location.

Is this place worth a visit? I will be in Basel for 2 days in May/June and might pop in if I have the time?

Absolutely yes - a fine zoo, and with a nice line in exhibit theming. As well as a place/habitat theme the newer exhibits have an additional theme - Australia is about modes of reproduction, Etosha is about feeding methods and so on. Fascinating place.
