Hi,

I live quite close to this zoo and was just wondering what it was like as I know a few of our zoochatters have visited here. From the pictures on the gallery it looks ok but a bit scruffy and rundown-is this a true representation of the place?

Thanks for your replies in advance
I am talking about the WETLANDS WILDLIFE PARK by the way

Hmm... not far from Sheffield... run down and scruffy... Wetlands WP?

:Yes...I thought I'd put it in the Wetland wildlife park forum but it appears I didn't:o
Aplogies

Hah! I think you can draw from that that 'scruffy and run down' pretty much covers it. It's an odd place, part fishery and part wildlife park. A few nice animals though, most particularly Pale-fronted Capuchins (Cebus albifrons), and for the most part it's not bad as such, just basic.

I'd definitely recommend a trip over to assess it for yourself. It doesn't take a long time to go round - I've even done it as a triple zoo day with Yorkshire WP and the Tropical Butterfly House at North Anston quite comfortably (though that was in the earlier days of YWP and will get progressively more difficult as they expand!). You need a car, though, I can't imagine it's easy to reach WWP by public transport.

Thanks for this reply!
I visited the tropical butterfly house about 5 years ago which was an okay visit. To be fair this place doesn't look too bad just a bit shabby but all the animals welfare needs look suited for. Apparently I visited many years ago and it was dissapointing because there were virtually no animal exhbiits just the fishery.

I've been visiting Wetlands for years and I think it's a great little collection. "Scruffy"? maybe - though I prefer rustic in appearance - but certainly not run down. Year on year, improvements to exhibits are made, new species brought in and better visitor facilities added - all on, what I would imagine is, a very small budget.
For many years Wetlands was the only animal collection locally, but now it's up against the Yorkshire Wildlife Park, I really hope it will hold it's own and continue to improve.

Thanks for your views max! To be fair I was probably a bit harsh calling it scruffy and all the enclosures do look ok and good enough for the animals needs. Hopefully it can hold against YWP-much as I love YWP I don't wish to see another collection go!

Wetlands Animal Park

Visited this collection last week and a lot of changes since last year -
capybara, meerkats and coatis moved to new larger enclosures,
1 peccarie died, 2 new ones arrived,
ostriches moved on, 2 bactrian camels arrived,
marmots know longer there, porcupine in their enclosure,
Kookaburras arrived,
new falconry and display area completed, displays now under way.

I visited Wetlands last weekend for the first time in a while.
The Cabybara's new enclosure is a great improvement on their previous home. The enclosure is 75% water - don't know how often they go for a swim - and with the vegitation there are plenty of hinding places.
The new Falconry area is a very tidy affair and the extra birds are welcome additions.
What I have always liked about Wetlands is that there always seems to be something new, or a bit of a change around every time I go. Still a great little place to visit and in my opinion, excellent value.
