Northeastern Wisconsin Zoo & Adventure Park What's New at the N.E.W Zoo?

1.0 Moose has arrived from Alaska Zoo. The male was part of a relocation of two orphaned bulls with the other moose going to Columbus Zoo. From Alaska Zoo's social media:

"Yesterday was relocation day for two of the zoo’s orphaned moose of the season! With two adult bulls as residents, we can’t house additional moose permanently at this time. We work with Alaska Fish and Game to line up permanent homes at other facilities. We are happy to report that moose “Strawberry” arrived safely at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and “Taco” arrived safely at the NEW Zoo & Adventure Park in Wisconsin. Our staff is experienced at making safe crates, arranging air transportation and preparing the animals properly for their trip. We will miss them but we are happy they made it safely to their new homes! Photos by John Gomes."
 
Updates from my visit today:

  • A lot of usually inactive animals were very active today, including the lions, Red Pandas, badgers, and penguins. Perhaps this was due to the lack of visitors?
  • A Sonoran Gopher Snake has replaced the Milk Snake.
  • The bearded dragon and legless lizard are now absent, as are there exhibits. Two new terrariums in the E&CC are home to Common Blue-tongued Skink and Western Hognose Snake respectively. The skink previously shared the bearded dragon's space but the hognose is new.
  • The zoo seems to be down to one Dusky Lorikeet now.
  • The zoo recently obtained a Tawny Frogmouth that will share the exhibit with the lorikeets in summer.
  • The Sandhill Crane has moved to the deer yard, along with a new second Sandhill.
  • The Prehensile-tailed Porcupine and Pied Crow have moved to the Nutrition Center exhibits.
  • A new male Snowy Owl has joined the exhibit with the female.
  • The new Moose is not yet on exhibit.
  • Sherman the Pronghorn has moved back to the elk/bison yard.
 
Updates from my visit today:

  • Lost of the animals were extremely vocal today. I've never heard Alpacas or Japanese Macaques make noises before.
  • No peafowl seen today, are they gone?
  • The Emu were off-exhibit for some reason.
  • The new Moose is on-exhibit now.
  • A Japanese Macaque was born.
  • The Central Bearded Dragon is back on exhibit, sharing the older of the two skink exhibits with the skink.
  • The tree frog exhibit in the EACC was empty with a "new exhibit coming soon" sign.
  • The Mayan Restaurant is open again, the entire zoo is now open.
 
Updates from my visit today:

-The Western Hognose Snake has been replaced by an Eastern Hognose Snake.
-The Amazon Milk Frogs are back on exhibit.
-The African Bullfrog exhibit has been moved to a different side of the E&CC.
-The Fantastic Leaf-tailed Geckos are gone.
-There is now an exhibit for Giant Cave Cockroaches in the E&CC.
-The Chilean Rose Tarantula has received a new exhibit.
-One of the Red Pandas had a bad limp.
-The Cotton-top Tamarin exhibit was split into two seperate areas.
-A Burrowing Owl has hatched.
 
Regarding the Snow Leopards: is it planned that Ahava and Robbie/Rajan will form a breeding pair? And was any announcement made when Tami passed away (assuming that she has)?
 
Updates from my visit today. Lots of news, this is a really exiting time!:

  • Rollie, the zoo's Southern Three-banded Armadillo, has passed away. Rollie was an animal ambassador and one of my favorite individuals at the zoo. I actually have a painting made by him.
  • The canopy walk is coming along nicely and should be completed in a couple of weeks. It starts at the Adventure Park and goes through the wood for a ways to end up between the Snow Leopard and Japanese Macaque enclosures.
  • The zoo is really promoting that mobile game Photo Fun Safaris. There are signs about it all around the zoo.
  • Due to the new AZA rules about visitor contact with animals, the goats and sheep have to be limited to one half of their enclosure. This means that yard is very crowded. The half they no longer occupy is now simply an outdoor area for the chickens.
  • A pair of Domestic Cattle have moved into the old Wild Turkey exhibit in the barn.
  • The European Fallow Deer appear to be gone from the zoo. Their exhibit was signed for Domestic Sheep but appeared to be empty.
  • There are new exhibits in the EACC from European Legless Lizard and an albino Pine Fox Snake. The legless lizard is not a new animal, and this is a better butter exhibit for the animal. The fox snake is new though.
  • There is only one each bearded dragon and blue-tonged skink on exhibit right now, sharing the long skink exhibit on the right side of the room.
  • The African Bullfrog exhibit has moved to the right side of the room.
  • The Amazon Milk Frogs are back on exhibit.
  • The exhibits for Giant Cave Cockroaches and Chilean Rose-hair Tarantula have moved to the left side of the room.
  • The Mayan Restaurant is closed due to being short staffed.
  • There is now a new Blue-and-yellow Macaw. Both Blue-and-yellow Macaws have been moved into the agouti exhibit (with the agouti, the agouti did not move).
  • The American Crow has moved into the old macaw exhibit. Formerly she was only on-exhibit during the summer, inside the alligator's winter quarters.
  • The kookaburras have moved into the Tawny Frogmouth exhibit.
  • The Galahs have moved into the old kookaburra exhibit.
  • The lorikeets have moved into the old Galah exhibit.
  • A very young and cute Blue Duiker has ben born, and I saw it nursing.
  • The Sandhill Crane has moved in with the Wattled Crane. There appears to only be one Wattled Crane left.
  • The Prehensile-tailed Porcupine has permanently moved into the Nutrition Center. This used to only be its winter quarters.
  • There is construction in the old fox exhibit, with the "New Exhibit Coming Soon" sign.
  • The North American Aviary is back open.
  • The badger were actually active!
  • The peafowl are back.
  • A Japanese Macaque was born.
  • One of the Black-footed Ferret exhibit was closed off and under construction. I did not see any ferrets today.

Other 2022 News:

On January 27th, the zoo announced that a (0.0.1) burrowing owl named Eclipse was born on January 15th.*

On May 5th, the zoo announced they have acquired a (1.0) albino rat snake named Maize which is now on exhibit at the E&CC.*

On June 8th, the zoo announced that (0.0.3) laughing kookaburras named Wasabi, Basil, and Peppermint were born on May 18th and 19th.

On June 30th, the zoo announced they have acquired (0.2) Belted Galloway cows named Olivia and Emily which are now on exhibit in the Children's Zoo area.*

Updates from my visit today:

-The former Fantastic Leaf-tailed Gecko exhibit is back but is now sitting empty with no animals (it is currently signed for the pitcher plants inside it). A sign said a new animal species is coming soon.

-I saw the new Cape Porcupines. The exhibit has been heavily renovated for them and now includes lots of climbing rocks and some tunnels.
