Whats your favorite species of duck?

How? There are Mandarin ducks in North America??
They've been introduced over here but I never heard of any introductions across the pond...

Anyways, my favourite duck species in terms of looks is probably the King eider, and for character probably the White-faced whistling duck.
Oops, I meant wood duck. I always get those two mixed up! :D They can be found throughout Minnesota.

I've done a bit of reading on endangered ducks recently and tried to increase my knowledge / decrease my ignorance on them.

As before I would still say that my favourites are the most threatened / endangered species but I would add two more to the list.

So it would be the following :

Brazilian merganser
Malagasy pochard
Madagascar teal (wish I had spoken with David Jeggo about this species when I had the chance)
Laysan teal
Meller's duck
Blue duck
Philippine duck
Salvadori's Teal

Long-Tailed duck, the eiders esp. Steller's (haven't seen this one yet), scaly-sided merganser. Torrent duck and steamer ducks I like too, though I have yet to see any. Expanding to a greater definition, nene, brant, blue-winged goose, magpie goose, coscoroba, and black-necked swan are cool, too.

*Correction, six more to the list.

Don't want to take the thread off-topic but speaking of endangered ducks I would like to ask how commonly kept these species are in zoos across the world?

Malagasy pochard

Madagascar teal

Laysan teal

Meller's duck

Blue duck

Philippine duck

Salvadori's Teal

I've always liked North American waterfowl the most, especially the Wood duck.
People seem to look past Mallards simply because they are common in my experience, but I think the females and males both are quite beautiful birds when you think and look about it long enough, same goes for simple city rock pigeons. Their plumage is stylish!

My dad one time said he liked ducks' plumage because it was sleek and sharp with bold contrast between colors and I agree with him.

I also like
  • American wigeon
  • Northern pintail
  • Blue-winged teal
  • King eider
  • Brazilian teal
  • Australian wood duck
  • Baikal teal
  • Smew
  • Garganey
I just like ducks in general. Every time I create a fictional zoo, Anatidae are always the most represented family of birds.

Honestly, I have to say that I never really was that interested in waterfowl nor ducks but I have definitely developed a greater interest in the species of conservation concern through my reading lately.

I can relate to that, I never used to have a interest in endangered amphibians, but in the past few months I have gotten a great interest in small endangered species like the La Brea poison frog, but I really have grown to enthusiastically talk about them to my friends.
They are cool animals!

True, thats the beauty of the natural world right ?

It is so vast and so diverse that there is always more of it left to explore and learn about.

And In my case, I'm constantly learning about the natural world. For instance, I had read about Chickadees so many times in my Birds of North america book, and It turns out the entire time I heard some specific bird sound that I thought wasn't a chickadee and was a blue jay, was actually A Chickadee!
And, today I learned about Atlantic pomfret!

For me it's a toss up between the wood, Mandarin, and black bellied whistling duck. In general ducks are a neat bird. I'm fortunate enough to live in the prairie pothole region and get to see lots of different species in the wild./
