Where are all the zoo nerds?

Well , I used to be an active member of zoo chat some months ago ... although almost every thread here is about " which is the best exhibit " or " which zoos have you visited " . As an underage and because of the fact that I live in Greece , wich is a country with not many zoos , I have visited only a small number of zoos and thus I can't post something relevant in any thread , except for the Greece thread . So , at least for me , do not posting doesn't necessarily mean that you are not interested in zoos anymore ... :) :o

I was thinking about annoying posts, and what is really annoying/ down grades ZooChat, these what I found the most annoying (some as whole posts, some as parts of posts):

- Over USE of bold, CoLoR UnderlinG, Italics and size.

-Random statements which don't benefit discussion; for example in a conversation about Sumatran Tigers in Europe "Flamingo Land has them".

-The use of lol, ROFL, IMO, IMHO, IMVHO, btw etc, which in my opinion down grades the conversation, "I liked the monkeys lol".

-People who post a new thread, and then get in a hissy fit if no one replies after a short (out even long) amount of time.

-When posting pictures put a whopping great image over it for copyright purposes, I think a watermark is fine (as long as it is just white, black or translucent).

-Who hate other people's opinion in a debate; "Your opinion is so stupid, you just hate everything you stupid b***h [or another insult]"

-The people, who when corrected, hate that person and have a hissy fit.

-The people who abuse other posters catchphrases.

-The members who come on here once just to ask for homework help, or those who just ask a question, and aren't coming on because they're fans of Zoos (also those members who try to sell us fake documents).

-Those who think they know everything about everything (nobody, or nothing know everything, probably less than 1% of everything is known to man).

-The people who act all jokily, but get annoyed when other people make (or try to make) jokes, aren't I punderful ;).

-When people assume your atupid, just because you don't know what exactly they are talking about.

-If they abuse those icons you can have with posts, or smileys.

-If people don't give a straight answer when you ask about an incident in the past of ZooChat that they refer to, than just give you a load of nonsense about how you should find it out (like saying to search for it, when the search doesn't work very well always (and I don't have time to go to over a thousand threads the search throws up to find what they are referring to).

-If like me you are a younger user (like me) and the older users think you are immature, when some of the stupidest posts (and members) are from older members.

-When people don't use any punctuation, making it unreadable (I know I have mentioned this before, but I mean no punctuation at all (sorry about that rant by the way).

An example post:

I hate you all, you just rant on about this, your all idiots who don't understand anything just cos that have tigers (like Chester) doesnt mean you HAVE to rant in about a model lol, you all make me ROFL IMVVVVHO :p.... I totally know more than all of you call me Einstein lol when I posted that thread you all totally should of replied Stupid Police! I HATE you all so go away!

Sorry if I ranted :)
Well done Macaw for proving just why I am staying away from posting as much!

Why shouldn't you waste your time searching for something,if you want to read it,BECAUSE I AM SURE AS HELL NOT GOING TO LOOK FOR IT AND WASTE MY TIME WHEN I DON'T WANT TO READ IT,JUST SO YOU CAN BE LAZY AND HAVE YOUR SEARCHES DONE FOR YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!

I meant when instead of somebody simply telling you what they are referring to, they tell you to search for it, when it won't take long for them to tell you what they are referring to.

Funny that Macaw. You seem to be one of the most childish members I've encountered on this site and your last post (which I have not completely quoted as it's that ridiculous) confirms that for me. You have contributed a great deal to the recent waning quality of posts in my opinion. I'm not the only member to think this. Please take a month (or two) off to read back your posts and try to understand how they look to other people.

So where are all the zoo nerds? They'll be back!

I think it should be remembered that there is no age restriction on zoo chat, thus you are going to get kids/teenagers on here who are not as perhaps as well read as some adult members. I am of the opinion that these young member's interest in zoos and the animals that live in them should be encouraged, not ridiculed although I fully appreciate that some younger members are inclined to be a bit cheeky and cocky when being corrected by their seniors. However I do recall about five years ago there was a kid used to come on here who was also very keen, he was never cheeky or back chatted the adults when being corrected, indeed one well known member on here used to take great delight in bullying the kid which I found most offensive. He later grew into a valued member on here in particular to his regular postings on his local Blackpool Zoo. I think the member who was doing the bullying recently declared his passion for railways, that solves it, we all know who Roy Cropper could be now under an alius:)

I am new. I hope this place becomes a tiny bit more active! I love it when forums are always busy. I have some ideas for zoo discussions, so hopefully people like them and discuss!

I've never once seen that message. Huh?

That gobbledygook on mibbit spells out Mibbit, but doesn't work on the embedded chat.

Nowadays Facebook really is the main way zoos report their news because the world has become such a dumbed-down place,

That's true, for sure. Time was when the Zoo websites 'news' sections carried detailed news about their animals- nowadays they are far more about publicity, events and promotions. Its as if the zoos often don't care about publicising their animal news so much anymore and nowadays everything except the most important items is often buried among other Facebook comments and they are increasingly presented in a rather infantile fashion too.:(

I post less and less because I'm not very well so don't have the opportunity to visit zoos very often so I have less and less to say about my own experiences. On the whole I don't think Zoochat is a particularly welcoming place, especially if someone is deemed not to be up to scratch by some members who presumably were born with infinite knowledge and experience of natural history, zoos, grammar, spelling and an intimate understanding of what goes on behind the scenes of every collection.

I find that there are a small number of members who are supremely arrogant and dismissive of others. The attention showered on some reviews and posts whilst others are ignored annoys me. There is another bunch - especially in the UK - who complain about anything new with all the reactionary fury of someone on the Daily Mail letters page. I find this so boring. And of course the I-know-something-you-don't-knows...

So that's why I am less active.

I also think the website suffered enormously from the photo purge. I think the galleries should be moderated with poor quality pictures, pictures from museums, multiple animal portraits removed in favour of actual zoo pictures, enclosure pictures and exeptionally well taken portraits or pictures of notable individuals or species.

.
Darwin had problems with this "Society" in times past lol. But you gotta love their sheer earnestness and self belief.

Would have to agree with most of your thoughts but I still think its a pity that the less parochial posters like yourself are turning off. Overall Zoochat is a great source of knowledge and information and it is generally well moderated, so any slight annoyances can be easily tolerated.

I think rather a lot of us agree; certainly a lot of images depicting exhibits and taxa which are no longer present in zoological collections were lost, which is part of the reason I started this thread:

http://www.zoochat.com/9/species-we-have-lost-over-last-410153/

Myself and the other moderators have been trying to prune the worst-quality photographs, along with any excessive duplicates of the same animals taken at the same time, as we come across them - but there is quite the backlog! I do, however, disagree with you that photographs from museums should be removed; these serve an important purpose, I feel.

Never regarded an interest in Zoos/wildlife/natural history as nerdish. Just a normal, albeit less common interest...

Dr Who maybe, that's fantasy...

Clearly it is possible for people to lose their interest in zoos - but it is something that I just can't understand. I write as someone who has been obsessed with such matters since I was tiny, and, if anything, am even more obsessed now. Sure, I can get bored of individual zoos (few UK zoos thrill me, I must admit), or disillusioned with aspects of zoos (I find the lack of interest in animals per se, and the relentless - and to my mind falacious - focus on conservation to be depressing), but lose my interest in zoos? Never.

I agree with my friend "Sooty Mangabey" as I cannot fathom losing my lifelong interest in zoos. It will never happen.

However, today might be the single slowest day on this site in years, with only a dozen or so updates in the "New Posts" section. For as long as I can remember there has often been anywhere from 40-50 "New Posts" each day but browsing through the Member List I see loads of familiar names that have essentially become extinct, or at the very least, endangered species. Alas, the exodus continues. On the bright side, there are some regulars who have been engaged with the gallery and the new photos from Chester Zoo are most welcome.

Although my zoo visits are now lessening, I do have a trip planned in two weeks that will result in photos from two out of state facilities. Where could they be? Hmmm...

Ironically, neither are in the city I am flying into and out of. That city has a major zoo I have never been to and yet I have no desire to visit it.
