yes that's why i am beginning to upload my photo like this on Facebook just to be sure i keep my right to my photos

and for all the other rights on this side i do fully understand and that's why i keep uploading them on this side i have a homepage myself i may have to begind to © them too just in case

Not sure what the laws are elsewhere in the world, but in Australia you do not have to specifically mark your photos or any other works you create to identify copyright - it is automatic. If you can prove you created the work, you own the copyright (unless you sell or give it away).

It is important to note that including a mark on your photos will not override any terms of use for a website you upload it to. The terms of use you implicitly agree to by uploading your photo overrides any watermarks or other marks you put on your photos.

That being said - in the case of third parties using your images without your permission, it can be useful to include a watermark on the image to make it easier to identify it as your content - but make it subtle so it doesn't detract from the image itself.

Just out of interest, I believe Facebook has moderated their terms of service dramatically in recent years and doesn't claim copyright over your images any more. Indeed, they have various privacy and content settings which allow you to control things like whether your images can be used in advertisements or other commercial content - something you previously had no control over.

now this isn't about Facebook but just to clarify this i don't mind share my photos on Facebook by the Share Button but that's all.
I do watermark them to show that's mine if there do want to see dem without the watermark for now, then there can go to my homepage and i dont watermark them to override any terms of use i do it for minimize any terms of use it may had without the watermark

That's not always as easy as it sound and it can be a reall hassle to do so at times
 
I've found a number of my photos used without permission on different facebook pages and blogs online. I've even had people openly try to claim them as their own. Often I get asked for permission before people use them, but I'm very conscious that they can come up quite high on detailed image searches.

As a result, all photos I've recently uploaded have some kind of mark on them. Some are subtle, but I've found the most efficient way is to put my initials on them in bulk. I'm aware that it does ruin the photo to some extent, but I'm now more comfortable in uploading greater quantities, and I hope that a monogram on an image is better than no image at all.

I think steganography (http: //en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steganography, pay attention to images of a tree and a cat) can help in this case. It is possible that if hidden information is not an image but a plain text, it could be resistant to change of image. In this case you can place you initials, say, in right down corner of image, not over the whole image.
Of course, this method works only when you have found your stolen image and want to proof your authorship.
 
It has been touched on somewhere in this thread but many zoos, Valencia Bioparc included, do not allow you to use photos taken there for commercial purposes without their express permission. If someone steals one of my photos taken at the bioparc and uses it commercially, does that mean they can be sued by the Bioparc?

I have just noticed that the latest 2 photos that I posted in the Gallery have my name and copyright claim from the EXIF data published with the other details when they are opened, as happened originally. Thank you for that Sim :)
I would advise everyone to see if they can set up their cameras to automatically add these to every image. It doesn't solve any major problems (because it can easily be deleted), but it means that a pirate can't use ignorance as an excuse.

I've found a reason to resurrect this thread.

I recently stumbled across one of my photos of an unidentified saki monkey at RioZoo when reading the description for Pithecia mittermeieri in a magnificent 2014 publication revising classification of the monk sakis: http://www.bioone.org/doi/full/10.1896/044.021.0101

I've only managed to find these articles because they mention zoochat as the photo source, so I would like to think that everyone has already given permission for the mentioned photos to be used - but I've listed them all just in case you haven't. There are many other documents I found which I was just unable to access.

I'm grateful for @Simon Hampel's previous comments about ownership as this was a subject I was about to bring up again before re-reading this thread. I can't seem to find the disputed clauses in the latest reincarnation of the site's terms and conditions - or are they still there somewhere?

In the Terms and Conditions - Terms of Service and Rules | ZooChat ... under section 8 "General Terms"

"You are granting us with a non-exclusive, permanent, irrevocable, unlimited license to use, publish, or re-publish your Content in connection with the Service. You retain copyright over the Content."

Which basically means, once you upload content to ZooChat, you are giving us the right to publish it on the ZooChat website for other people to view - because that's kind of how websites work.

We don't claim ownership of your content (posts, photos, etc), and we frequently get requests from 3rd parties to use content on this site and we pass all such requests on to the person who created or uploaded that content - we don't give permission to other people to use content you upload to ZooChat (other than to view it as part of the ZooChat website), only the copyright owner can do that.
 
I have had many requests for permission to use my photos posted to this site and have always consented, it is a good feeling to know those permissions often make it into research and publications!
 
that's an interesting list devilfish. I'm presuming you weren't asked for permission for the use of your photo given you found it accidentally?
 
I've received numerous requests for my photos over the years (partly due to the sheer quantity that I've uploaded over the years) and I would guess that at least twice a year a request comes from somewhere and I always say YES. However, in "devilfish's" list there are a couple of my photos that have popped up in publications and I do not recall agreeing to the use of either of them. So it goes in the modern world of the internet...

That onager photograph was actually from Whipsnade, not Dublin, Zoo.

I was contacted to ask permission to use this photograph and I was happy to grant it.

I have been asked several times for permission to reproduce my ZooChat photos and I always say yes.

However, I have frequently encountered my ZooChat photos appearing on websites without my permission being sought first.

No, I wasn't - it was a complete surprise. The author has been very gracious, and explained that they received permission from someone. It wasn't me though. Like others, I have always granted permission when requested.

To my great surprise, whilst in Poland attending this year's Zoohistorica at Wroclaw Zoo, I recently encountered a ZooChat photograph of mine in a most unexpected place.

The signage on Wroclaw's Indian rhinoceros enclosure is illustrated with a photograph of an Indian rhino; the photo seemed familiar to me. After closer inspection, I realised it was a reproduction of my photo of Whipsnade's male Indian rhino "Hugo" that I posted on ZooChat back in 2009.

similarly to the above, when I was at the Taiping Zoo recently (in Malaysia) I came across a photo of mine of a Southern Serow used in a sort of educational booklet they had in their visitor office.
