Second poll of 2021 in a series for zoochatters to vote for one of two EDGE mammal species. This time it is primates and a case of little vs large.

Both species are primates (one great ape and the a prosimian) have characteristic red fur, are frequently kept by zoos and are classed as " Critically Endangered" by the IUCN: the Sumatran orangutang and the red ruffed lemur.

I don't think either of these do too badly in terms of charisma or appeal in terms of the general public but it will be interesting to see how this one works out with zoochatters.

Which of these mammal species interests you most / will you vote for ?

Please also feel free to write comments regarding why you made the choice and why the species you have voted for interests you more.

Yes, true , there are indeed.

However, thanks to advances in genetic we are now finding out that there are far more great ape species than were previously thought.

For example, only very recently there was the news that the Tapanuli orangutang was a newly described species.

It wouldn't suprise me at all if we see further gorilla or orangutang species or subspecies described.

Yes, true , there are indeed.

However, thanks to advances in genetic we are now finding out that there are far more great ape species than were previously thought.

For example, only very recently there was the news that the Tapanuli orangutang was a newly described species.

It wouldn't suprise me at all if we see further gorilla or orangutang species or subspecies described.

As a rule far fewer of the larger apes, but they can go on splitting hairs for years to come when looking at the DNA :D

That sounds very much like the mouse lemur.

It is estimated now that there are more than 20 of them and new species are being discovered through genetic analysis fairly regularly.

Would appreciate if you could but if not then thats fine.

Regarding deforestation I believe the red ruffed lemur (which I voted for) is in as dire straits as the orangutang and perhaps even more so given that it is frequently hunted for the bushmeat trade.

Because the black and white lemur does have three subspecies including the belted ruffed lemur.

Yea definitely the red ruff, this was a while after the 1st belted ruff pair arrived in the UK. Coupe be a case of miss information but I'm sure this was discussed.

Yeah these Kind of Questions are just difficult For me, Sorry...
They Both have large amounts of Deforestation threatening them, So it's also a hard question for both of them.

Thank you for your comment @Sausagefingers, not currently having much luck in finding any further information out on that investigation.

It appears (at least for the moment) that no subspecies of the red ruffed lemur have been recognized.

So try to vote based on which one you prefer which is also a valid criteria in this poll.
