Which would you recommend?

Hi,

I am going to Birmingham for a works conference on Thurs 20th Jan and I have booked the Friday off work so that I can stay overnight and explore one or two zoos on the Friday.

Can anyone recommend any good zoos in the area - the two I am currently looking into are Dudley Zoo and Twycross.

Any help would be appreciated :)

Suzanne

Dudley Zoo is a improving zoo with many other attractions these being the Tecton Buildings and the Castle itself on the Animal Species front there are some areas of the zoo a little empty at present awaiting the arrival of new animals but for a day out this would be a good one.
Twycross is also a nice zoo with it's largish selection of primates it's a case of which you want a day at a Zoo or a day at an attraction.

If you go for the Dudley option you could also consider squeezing in either Birmingham Nature Centre (which has a few nice/unusual species) or Birmingham Sealife (I'm generally not a fan of aquaria, but I know some people are and it does have Hammerheads!).

and don't forget that West Midlands Safari Park is not far either - I did an overnighter at the end of september last year and did WMSP & Twycross Zoo.

Have Fun!

Thanks Guys, thats one of the problems im having as WMSP is only open weekends and so are a few other places due to the Winter Season. Will let you know where I decide to go :)

WMSP is open all week long it's the Birmingham Nature Centre that is closed monday to friday at present
WMSP is a great day out combine that with Dudley Zoo and you caould have the pefect day out

On the WMSP website it shows them as closed during the week until Monday 15th Feb? or am i reading it wrong? thanks

My mistake I didn't see the website they are usally open all year round except for christmas and new years day
Sorry for any confusion

Suzanne,
Do you have your own car to drive to these places or will it be public transport because this will make a real difference on where you can get.

^yees it will. Im pretty sure WMSP is accsesable by Public Transport (tho i havent been in a while so)

Is it worth doing wmsp on public transport? Surely you'd miss the best exhibits by not doing the safari bit?
The nocturnal house and reptile collection are world class, but not really worth the entrance price alone.

I'd be inclined to agree here - for me the safari drive is easily the best part, agreed that the nocturnal house, reptiles and hippos are also worth the trip but not just for them alone.
The African Hunting Dogs drive through bit is fabulous in itself

Possible notable zoo trips for 2011 could include: Minnesota, St. Paul, Kansas City, San Diego, Santa Barbara, and Honolulu. But everything, other than the LA Zoo is tentative.

WMSP Do supply there own minibuses at a extra cost so it is possible to go by public transport and still do the game reserve, not sure how much it cost's though.
