ZSL Whipsnade Zoo Whipsnade; 2012 and beyond

Scott, I love it!

Is that his official name or just what the keepers are calling him for now?

Brilliant! Makes a change from Burmese words meaning "spirit of the wind" and similar, though I'd draw the line at Jordan*.

* that's because of the nano-celebrity, no talent, bimbo, not "our" Jordan who does occasionally infuriate me but the site wouldn't be the same without him.

Rhubarb and Custard the two European lynx cubs (Born 2011) are set to leave the zoo some time this week, it is unknown where there moving too.

whipsnade now have a merlin in thier birds of the world shows just put on facebook and their web page

Was up at the zoo in the snow on Sunday, very cold and a bit of a mission to get up the hill, but the staff had done a fab job of clearing the roads round the zoo, no snow to be seen on parts. It was lovely to see some of the animals enjoying the snow! Cheetahs and otters were off show as their moats were frozen but saw everything else, although some of the animals were curled up in straw beds staying warm (and who can blame them!) Was nice to see all the elephants (including the new youngster) out enjying the snow and the wolverine, red panda and lynx were the most active that I have ever seen them! Any questions just ask :-)

Wow you're brave! Haha. Nice to know that most animals were outside, would've been a bit of a wasted journey for you if they weren't! Were the Indian Rhinos out?

The roads were actually pretty clear to get up there so wasn't too much of a challenge. The rhinos weren't outside but you could see the male in the house. As for the elephants, the male was on the sand area whilst all the others were out in the main paddock with the keepers, taking photos of the youngsters playing in the snow.

Does this mean that they are able to keep all the females and youngsters together now ? Previously some were always separated from others .

I believe it was Mya and Azziah that had to be sepearted (might be wrong though) Although if you look on youtube all the videos of the elephants walks round the park includes all the animals.

My understanding is that Mya and Lucha cannot be together because they are both (too) dominant. They are only let together under the direct supervision of the keepers, for example during walks. It sounds like the keepers were present too when catinthehat saw them.

I suppose the latter would at some point probably require one of these dominant females to be sent out to another zoo in need of a matriarchal herd leader.

Sorry, it`s not mya and Lucha, but Mya and Kaylee who don`t get along.
And I hope they won`t send a single female away, but rather one of them with all her bonded herd members - either Kaylee with Lucha and Kaylee`s calf, or Mya with Aziza, Aziza`s calves and Karishma plus offspring.

Thanks for clarifying the situation Yassa . With several paddocks and large indoor accommodation , I guess Whipsnade does not have too much of a problem coping with the incompatability .

They have kept them as a split group like this for a long time now. I don't think they would consider moving any of them unless the herd was bigger than it is now- the losses of several calves from Herpes virus and a predominance of male births is still limiting its growth.

Spent a lovely weekend at Whipsnade! Love the new 'trunkline' buses instead of the noisy smelly double deckers (did not use the new ones just prefer them )
Lots of people were changing their minds about bringing their cars in now it has gone up to £20!!

Lynx were hard to spot again, now the youngsters have left. The rest of the animals (we saw) were all out enjoying the sun.

Work has started on the lookout lodges, they have only got as far as the bases, but they look tiny and a bit of an eyesore where they are situated. Heres hoping they landscape them well! Work taking place on the adjacent toilets, I assume fitting showers.

Saw the elephants browsing down the side road opposite the oryx, was lovely to see Scott (the youngest elephant) racing around and trying to throw sticks. It was marvellous the control the keepers have over such a young calf, Scott was pretend charging the crowd, but was stopped in plenty of time by just a keeper raising a stick.

Does anyone know what work has been carried out in the water mammal house?

I presume you are talking about the sealions? :p A new filtration system apparently, though I've been thinking about that enclosure recently since they've been doing the work and thinking about how not very nice it actually is... It would be nice to have a more landscaped, natural look like, for example, Colchester's sealion pool. What does everyone else think?

The lodges are expected to be finished during March. Apparently the actual cabin's come pre-made so it's only the foundations and base stuff that needs to be done building-wise, as well as toilet/shower facilities as you mentioned and probably some landscaping too.

Tell us more, did I miss something? Whereabouts are they. What are they?
