ZSL Whipsnade Zoo whipsnade 2013

Is giraffe cow Savannah the female due in late 2013?
The extended Giraffe House finished by now?

The house & walkway are aimed to be finished for the school half-term , so should be finished in next week or so. There were plenty of people working on it when i went Saturday 5th.

1. Yes. I don't know exactly when though. She is the only female in the group that was born there, and possibly also their only current breeding female.

2. No. At least it wasn't this time last week though as Pipaluk said, its a hive of activity. The indoor house is finished structure-wise and I could see into it but it wasn't completed then but it may be by now though. The Giraffe enter the original building by going around the side of the new part but were shut in the paddock because of all the work. The new raised viewing platform/walkway alongside the new sanded yard area is on the north(?)/ 'zoo entrance' side of the building.

Both other females are expectant, so breeding wise it is 1.3 active breeders.

I am pleased to hear that.:) Is the young male in the group that was born there from; Savanah x Bruno.?

The male 'Bruno' is still the 2nd smallest animal in the group- a bit surprised he could mate with 'Ina' who is very tall.;)

How many common hippos does the zoo have & have many pygmy hippos?

Do you still get to see all the animals even during the winter season?

Three common Hippos. ( one male, two females.)

Not sure on Pygmy Hippos- usually a couple though.

You can see most animals in winter though some of course may be in the indoor buildings- most of which are accessible to visitors.

can anyone give me a list of species in the discovery center. as it was closed when i visited for the first time.

Common Hippo calf

Hi

I went to Whipsnade Zoo today. In addition to the giraffe and the elephant newborns there is now a Common Hippo calf! He or she was on display but was sticking very close to Lola who is the mother. Please find in the gallery the best photo I could get of the calf along with the new notice now on display. The calf was born on December 11.
