ZSL Whipsnade Zoo Whipsnade 2014 #2

It would be nice to see more cranes at Whipsnade. There was a time (about 1980) when the park held about ten or eleven species.

As at 1/1/14

1.0 west African crowned crane

1.1 East African crowned crane

2.3 Stanley crane

0.1 demoiselle crane(I think maybe 2 now)
I think that the first 3 are still held in the closed bird garden. The demoiselle are in the aviary by the cafe.

Pretty sure they now have a pair of West African Crowned Cranes now,they also have 1.1.1 Red-crowned Cranes as well!

Sorry, I ignored the species that Pertinax had already mentioned. The presenter on the train yesterday stated they have hatched 2 red -crowned/Manchurian cranes this year, but I've only seen the one youngster that you refer to.

The Thomson's gazelle are now fully visible on the hard standing of the bongo stable-still quarantined though. Anyone with a good zoom should be able to get a decent shot.

The new giraffe calf is confirmed as female.
 
I went today and I'm afraid there is no news on Azizah's new calf at the elephant paddock but hopefully anytime soon. I popped over to the Bongo paddock and see how the Thomson's Gazelle are settling in and they are doing well. they like their new home and the Blesbok liked their new home aswell
 
I drove past the zoo the other day and I could have sworn I saw a baby American Bison in the yard. I could very well have been seeing things (which I am guessing is the more likely) just thought I would check here to see if its true or that I am going a bit mad!

I thought the male had had the snip to stop any breeding?
 
well as I said I may have been seeing things. You drive past quite quickly so it may have been something else.
 
The zoo has announced three new projects, starting November: construction of a new Main Entrance; extending the the elephant barn, and a project involving butterflies (walk through?).

The elephant keepers have certainly been fighting for this for a long time and, with the successful birth rate and the herpes outbreak under control, I say good luck to them! I believe the new barns will have deep sand akin to Chester's.
 
Another male - the keeper quotes in the article say 'him' and 'his' with reference to the new calf! Interesting (and nice) that this calf has been allowed to be born outside with the rest of the herd!
