Anyone know what has happened to Whipsnade's pair of Gaur?

When I went recently the male Indian Rhino was using their paddock and house. I didn't see them elsewhere in the Park though...

The male may have died, and the female moved to another zoo, where she could have some company. They're social animals aren't they?

If the pair at whipsnade have died or moved to the continent then yes, there are no gaur in the country. Let's take a moment of silence.....

I've never seen a gaur anyway. The closest think to a gaur is a pair of javan banteng an zurich.

i doubt they would have recently moved the female abroad recently what with fmd and bluetongue scares at the moment, if they have gone they are a sad loss to the british zoo scene, saw my first gaur at port lympne, a huge impressive animal. In the masterplan for edinburgh they have some made up photos of an asian elephant enclosure and in the enclosure they are shown sharing with a group of gaur, so there maybe a little hope.

i don't know what the options are for bringing in gaur to the uk, i would say wild animals from india or any of se asia would be out of the question. The european population are mainly related to the highly successful group at berlin, and i think the north american population is a mixed population genetically, but who knows.

Port Lympne had a pair some time back and i think they sent one or both to Whipsnade a few years ago

Yes, but the FMD and Blue Tongue issues are only very recent. She could have been moved anytime within the past year.. The pair were still at Whipsnade last September(a year ago that is)

In Europe all gaur stock are in some way related to the Berlin Zoo herd. So, unless there is a committed drive from the EEP the status of gaur in all Europe remains precarious.

I see little hope for a self-sustaining gaur population in the UK. Whipsnade and London have both had a long running battle with breeding them. I think they had 2.2 at one point, now the entire UK stock (admittedly derived from Berlin Zoo stock) are down to just the one female.

And that's provided she is still at Whipsnade or elsewhere in the UK..

I have no reason to believe that Whipsnade have transferred their gaur female. Certainly, I do not know of any UK facility that would be able to house a gaur at such short notice and with FMD and blue-tongue around. Port Lympne and Bekesbourne are out of the question since they have looked elsewhere for a Bos family member, the banteng.

I was at Whipsnade earlier this year and the Gaur had been moved to the old Black Rhino house to make room for the extension of the Indian Rhino accommodation. I think the male was still there at the time but I did only see one animal - the sad part is that they bred a calf (late last year or early this year?) but it splayed its legs and had to be put down.

That makes sense as the building is the correct size. Its also the one enclosure I forgot to look at...
