from this pic it seems there is a wallow as they both have "tide marks" and they had been kept out the back all morning whilst cleaning was being done.
it was on here that i read they had a wallow.

The 'tideline' level indicates they've been lying in a muddy area but not deep mud or water.

The new bull from Dublin must be in the old shed, I wonder if there is an indoor pool in that? I can't believe Whipsnade have kept Hippos with no indoor pool for over fifty years, perhaps much longer, before this house was built, particularly as they have to be shut in during very cold weather-like now.

When I last visited a couple of Lionesses looked a bit chubby to say the least, I was just wondering if anyone knew if they are pregnant, or maybe they just need to stop lying by the glass all day?

Well done to Whipsnade, I really should visit (hoping to in July). I still think though that 'critically endangered in their native habitat' is a slight exaggeration of 'vulnerable'

I hadn't realised this latest calf had a bad start but fortunately everything seems okay now.

Jordan12- be prepared- you could be disappointed if the new male Hippo isn't yet on show, particularly if they are not outdoors due to bad weather- I would rate your chances as 50/50, maybe less if he's still being kept in the offshow area.

Do the Zoo still have Greater Kudu?

Yes. They currently have 1 male and 4 females. According to ISIS there have been two births this year.

Unless things have changed since the summer, the kudu are in the very far back paddock, opposite the hippo paddocks.

Yes, the Scimitar-horned Oryx are between the main road and the back of the lion enclosure (on the website map this paddock is marked with an Arabian Oryx, which are actually in the paddock on the right as you enter Passage Through Asia).

As it's a bit tricky to describe - I've done a sketch...

Can you get a decent view of the Indian Rhino's and are all or some in the new rhino house Maguari?

Both the old and new Indian Rhino houses were in use when I was last there, and you'd be very unlucky not to get a good view of a rhino at one or the other. You can't go inside the older house, but the outdoor holding yards have very close-range viewing from a raised walkway.

Jordan- if the zoo is open you should see one or both Indian rhino calves- they may well both still be living in the old sheds and yards where there is a raised walkway so you will see them close to (but looking down on them). But if its too cold they could be shut inside, but you can still look through a window at the side of the building, to maybe see one of them..

But a warning- not sure if you've ever been to Whipsnade before but its high up on the Downs and exposed to bad weather- so if there's any more snow/bad weather between now and your planned visit you'd be wise to check they are definately open before you set out.
