ZSL Whipsnade Zoo Whipsnade Updates

went to whipsnade toady and keeper was cleaning pygmy hippo pool, i looked at common pool and thought thats definately lola but the other didnt look like nigna so i asked the very helpfull keeper just to check and he said it was lola and hoover. (it would seem he is hoover now) they have been together for about 2 weeks now and there have been several matings and they are going to keep them together a while longer then try to put lola back with nigna when they are sure she is pregnant. although they are not sure how well this will go as they are not sure they will accept eachother. i asked how nigna was as they hadnt been separated since lola was born and he said she has been quite calm about it all and is happy in the pool out the back. so fingers crossed!!

Good news. Be nice to see a baby 'proper' hippo in the UK again. Thanks for that!

That's the first time I have heard for sure there is another pool for them 'at the back' though whether its part of the 'new' house or the old 'shed' I don't know.

I thought maybe in the summer they might have all three together at least in the outdoors but as there are two outdoor paddocks & pools maybe there's no real point. Glad they have gone straight ahead with trying to breed them too.

the keeper said they have all been outside but were separated before lola was introduced but apparently hoover was trying to climb the bars to get to the girls......;)

News about the Red Panda Cub:

Born last June, the cub is only now taking its first tentative steps and exploring its surroundings.

Red panda cubs are known to stay tucked away, close to their mothers for several months after birth - but the extremely cold weather in December and early January prolonged this cub’s time indoors.

Now visitors can get a good view of the cub, which lives with mum Geri and father Peter in a large oak tree in the middle of the zoo, as it gets used to climbing.

Thanks for the info on the hippos, nice to see he is able to breed and spread the genes. I hope there are small hippo feet soon.

Well I have never heard Hoovie being called Hoover before, it has always been Hoovie.

But now it appears Whipsnade have reverted to using his original name- hence the 'two names' which are sometimes shown under animals' studbook names.

I'm still getting over them doing this. It actually shows you that nameing animals is indeed more complicated then many might think!!

Hoovie was always Hoovie and never Hoover (because of the Brand names/Vacuum Cleaners, etc.) We entered a competition to name the baby Hippo, that was run by TV3 back in 2002. Seeing the clip of his mother 'hoovering' up her food was the inspiration for the name.
