ZSL Whipsnade Zoo Whipsnade Zoo 2014 #1

Technically correct, which as we all know is the best KIND of correct :D

Sadly there is bugger-all chance of the hoofstock species I would most like to arrive at Whipsnade doing so; it is painfully obvious that the climate in Western Europe is nonconductive to the survival of Saiga Antelope.

My policy is that if I'm going to have unrealisable dreams, they might as well be really good ones. I've never seen a saiga or a pronghorn, they were both before my time at Whipsnade, but if I'm going to dream it will be chiru or tamaraw and then I'll go the whole hog, with a side order of giant forest hog :D

ZSL Whipsnade.....

Giants would probably eat the Pygmies, pigs being pigs......

The mention of pigs brought back memories of Warthog in concrete pits below the Parrot house; I am talking of the early 1950's. The parrot house was similar to a wooden cricket pavilion with a verandah down the slope from the parking place for the penguins. the warthogs slightly further south on the downs . The pens were filled with rubble and porcupine & marmot pis put there.

Incidentally, the wooden Parrot House at Whipsnade was originally the Fellows' Tea Pavilion at London Zoo; it was dismantled and re-erected at Whipsnade to provide parrot accommodation.

If we're being pedantic, you probably mean 'non-conducive' - 'nonconductive' implies we're discussing its ability to transfer heat or electricity through itself! :p

Also: Nilgai + Impala + Blesbok + Thomson's Gazelle = happy Maguari! :)

Living in such a cold climate, they *are* known for being well insulated!

Nilgai+ Impala+ Blesbok +Thomson's Gazelle + Wildebeest = Contented Pertinax.:)

Nilgai+ Impala + Blesbok +Thomson's Gazelle + Wildebeest + Golden Takin = Ecstatic TLD

(Seriously though, having seen three Takin ssp in the one location last month I really, really would enjoy having at least one more ssp around in the UK)

I'd like to make a request for Mountain Tapir then, along with everyone elses additions to the wishlist-even less likely than some of the suggestions, i know.

In saying that, any tapir species would be nice - seems a bit of an Obvious omission.

I visited as a toddler in about 1961 or 1962 so I may have seen pronghorn and saiga. The only photograph I have is me with a domestic goat. That is the trouble with visiting zoos with non-zoo-orientated people.

I do remember that there was a little herd of white domestic goats at Whipsnade, although I can't remember where they were kept. Didn't they provide the mascots for the Welch Fusiliers or one of the other Welsh regiments?

Alan

You can still find White Windsor goats on the children's farm- Eenie, Minie and Mo!

Tapirs would be quite a straightforward addition to look after, but that would mean Whipsnade beginning an "Americas" zone, which they more-or-less have the foundations for if you take into consideration the Californian sealion, Caribbean flamingo and free-roaming Mara! It's a feasible idea I think, and would round off the zoo nicely! Why are mountain and Baird's tapir so underrepresented in the UK though?

All good hoof stock wish lists so far but I'm throwing my hat in the ring for some small cat species! I don't think Whipsnade have ever kept these have they?
